Yep! It’s an open source alternative to DO. The mental model transfers basically 1:1. If you check it out would love feedback!

This is really cool! We did something very similar recently with Rivet for an infinitely-large sandbox world using chunking + dynamically moving entities between chunks. github.com/rivet-dev/ri...

DO are great for this. We also support stateful workloads like this over at rivet.dev for non-Cloudflare platforms.

We built an OSS alternative to DO that supports all serverless platforms over at rivet.dev. This post is about Vercel (which does not support WS), but also applies to Lambda: www.rivet.dev/changelog/20...

SQLite is still in the works, but we've built an open-source alternative to DO over at rivet.dev Built to be as easy as possible to host on-prem. Supports both dedi hardware & serverless. Happy to answer any questions!

Yep! Effect clusters & workflows are in alpha. There's some overlap, everything looks like an actor if you squint hard enough haha. One of these weekends I'll roll a deeper Effect integration, but I haven't figured out how to correctly handle restoring Effects for durability.

Two days with @anthropic.com Claude Code (vs Aider & Cursor) – currently my favorite copilot. + Smart search/replace w/o explicit files + Smart auto-architect/ask switching - No auto-lint/test - No explicit fs scope (aka /add) - No web crawling - Buggy 1.0 UI - No vim bindings

that sounds like a good approach! the only recommendation would be to create a cache or index of "places" since you're going to end up with a lot of fan out requests to locations and choke your system.

Nathan Flurry 🔩 @nathanflurry.com · 16/02/2025
we used to just run game servers until recently, so we have a very liberal draining policy on actors if we're upgrading machines (unlike DO which just kills you without warning) however, if the host node crashes, you're SOL getting that data back is that a problem?

Nathan Flurry 🔩 @nathanflurry.com · 16/02/2025
cheers! we do that for our container solution runtime already. our v8 isolate runtime launched in december, it'd would be an afternoon of work to get the volumes set up correctly 😅

mvsqlite has a very similar limitation on foundationdb. fdb has a 10 kb value size limit + a 5s transaction limit, but sqlite doesn't have either of those limitations. probably works similar to what you have in mind: su3.io/posts/mvsqli... fun fact: the mvsqlite dev now works at deno

forgot to mention on constraints – it's easy to provide a custom fs driver for the deno runtime (which mocks the node runtime too). but we also have container support (unlike cloudflare), so i'd rather go a level down to FUSE.
000
Nathan Flurry 🔩 @nathanflurry.com · 16/02/2025
in the meantime, we're shipping our sqlite driver with a custom foundationdb vfs backend because remote filesystems aren't going to cut it (yet). i've only done limited research in to distributed fs, so i'd love any ideas anyone might have.

regattastorage.com this company recently launched and i'm really hoping that when we decide to visit the fs, they'll be reliable enough for us to use.

limit the file system size to something small like 1 GB and download the whole thing on start. your coldstarts will be high (0.1-1s), but acceptable. but 1 GB is unacceptably low.
100
Nathan Flurry 🔩 @nathanflurry.com · 16/02/2025
implement a FUSE FS that lazily pulls chunks from a remote source and caches it locally, then snapshot back to the remote while the DO lease is held. there's only 1 reader/writer, so this is acceptable. however, large fs changes will strain the system. i want to look in to this option more.

Nathan Flurry 🔩 @nathanflurry.com · 16/02/2025
make the scheduler aware of volume affinity. this is what k8s + csi does. great, until you either have (a) your volume is on an overloaded node or (b) that node goes down. then you have to live migrate the EBS, which will block your DO from being operable for an unacceptable amount of time.
100
Nathan Flurry 🔩 @nathanflurry.com · 16/02/2025
ok, so nfs is out, we need EBS. what options do we have:
100
Nathan Flurry 🔩 @nathanflurry.com · 16/02/2025
the problem is, NFS is not a one-size-fits-all. trying to run sqlite/duckdb/postgres on it will lead to sharp performance edges. even traversing a directory system is going to lead to lackluster performance.
100
Nathan Flurry 🔩 @nathanflurry.com · 16/02/2025
we're building an oss durable objects alternative over @rivet.gg. we've been toying with using NFS/EFS to implement something like this. then we wouldn't even have to ship a native sqlite integration – you could just use the fs.
