Way too many people respond to injustice by blaming as a whole whatever group produced those who perpetrated it. That’s not breaking the cycle, it’s just pushing it along. Where do we go from there? How does anything change or improve?

I rarely know who buys them, when they sell in a gallery... but the guy really wanted to talk to me about it, I guess. I'm not always sure the explanations I have are enough for people... but if I could put it into words, I'd write a story instead of making a painting.

Rise - oil on canvas - 44x54 inches - October 2006 - private collection I finished this one 20 years ago. I seem to recall that it was purchased by a psychiatrist, from a long-gone gallery at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, CA. #fineart #contemporaryart #surrealism #oilpainting

Ephemera - oil on canvas - 16x29 inches - October 2016 I finished this one 10 years ago. Secretary birds are fun to paint… I did a few. If you find yourself in Santa Fe, NM, check it out in person at Keep Contemporary gallery! keepcontemporary.com #fineart #contemporaryart #surrealism #oilpainting

Wow, that's a good long life for a dog. I'm sorry for your loss. Winston made it to 15 and a half (we got him as a rescue when he was about a year old) before cancer got him. Pups are the very best. It's too bad with as much as humans have changed them, we couldn't give them longer lives...

I'm far too committed to the ideals of anti-racism to not judge you by your Morrissey bumper sticker. (Because screw that racist piece of shit.)

Thanks🙂. Ithought it would be a healing process, sort of like hanging out with him, again. It didn’t quite work out that way. Also, I tend to go off in bad directions when stress is high… and, man, the past 2 years…

Can we just keep arguing for another decade or so, til every clock we use is internet connected, and just slowly starts "falling back" a minute each day in the middle of the night from September-October, then do the reverse in the spring, so sunrise is never before 6 am and sunset isn't 6pm in June?

2024 was garbage even before we lost Winston, our near constant companion for over 14 years. And then it got worse. I started this that year, and have gone back to it a few times. The closer the subject, the harder they are to paint... and doing so after he was gone was damn hard. Too hard...

Nate Seubert @nateseubert.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
This one was hard, and I never got it right. I think I might have finally figured it out! Winston will finally have the memorial he deserves. #fineart #contemporaryart #oilpainting

I only got these tires a cut weeks ago. I never got a nail in my tire until I started driving to downtown LA every day. Now, a few times a year. Garbage city.

Given how we’ve used the military over the last quarter century, I’m honestly kind of ambivalent… I just hope no one tries to kill us while our guard is down.

The place is basically 2 complexes w/ a parking lot in the middle. If it’s 1/2 empty, why not do project in stages, so no one has to leave (and be unlikely to return)? Temporarily move galleries to the other side while construction happens. We’ve lost too many of these spaces already.

We desperately need housing, here. I’m sure there are ways to build it that don’t destroy the few cultural institutions we have.

When these paintings showed later in Denver, CO, a newspaper art critic called them “off-putting paintings in garish cotton candy colors.” I used that as a tag line for years. It was a group show, I was the only artist mentioned by name in the article.

The Regrettable Need - oil on canvas - 48x52 inches - September 1996 I worked on this other image at the same time, sharing colors between them. Both were completed in September of 1996. I think I got $200. I did sell the original, later.
an oil painting I made of a man crouched on the floor of a room with no windows or doors. His arms and legs show the bones under his skin, he has no hands or feet. Done in bright magentas & blues.

The technology of the time didn’t allow for great reproduction (and I had no experience with that, yet), so the final result came out looking a lot different (and got cropped, for some reason).
A photo of the blue vinyl record “Disassembly Required” by Beta Minus Mechanic, featuring my painting “The Fix” on the cover. It got cropped, and the color looks pretty bad. But people saw and liked it.

The Fix - oil on canvas - 48x48 inches - September 1996 - private collection. Thirty years ago, a band I knew asked me to make a painting for their record cover. I came up with something I liked a lot… and they liked, too.
an oil painting I made of a man in a chair in a room with no windows or doors, sitting in front of a TV with a man and woman on the screen. Everything is done in blues, except the screen, which is done in magentas & purples.

Deliver Us - oil on canvas - 14 inches - September 2011 - private collection I made this painting 15 years ago. I didn’t have it very long, as I recall. It went off to a happy, new home, which is the best thing they can do. #fineart #contemporaryart #surrealism #oilpainting
A mostly grey oil painting of 3 men in suits, among large blocks of rubble, in front of the full moon. The 2 on the sides have no heads and are just hollow suits, the middle figure has a large red cactus flower for a head.Detail of the red cactus flower

Syracuse University has a bunch of originals of his that they used to pretty regularly show in the art building's gallery, when I went there. I was always happy to spend time with them.

Dems are at least possibly swayed by public opinion. We’re going to need to do a lot of yelling & protesting…which sucks, but it’s better than letting it all just fall apart.

People don't want nice things? People just want to keep things going the way they are? People just want to keep watching tech bros and their pet politicians burn the future? I'm so old, I remember when a black man with a middle-eastern name couldn't possibly win the presidency...

You should resign your office immediately, if you’re not interested in protecting the people of this state from the malefactors of great wealth. The people of California need and deserve better than a charlatan such as yourself in the office of Attorney General!

Thanks for selling the workers of our state out to the billionaires. I hope you don’t have any plans to run for other offices, because you will never, ever get my vote again, after approving this wildly anti-competitive Paramount merger.

...local jobs, that allowed people who weren't millionaires/billionaires to spend money in the local economy. Every fucking thing is becoming a struggle, unless you're rich. At some point, the rest of us need to stop complying. Stop buying their shit. Stop voting for their pet politicians.

I've seen a lot less sales, for myself as well as other artists, since the writer's strike. I guess I'll see things get even worse, now that our useless Gov. Newsom pushed our unreliable Atty. Gen. Bonta to approve the wildly anti-competitive Paramount merger, which will cost thousands of jobs...

Still don’t get how we didn’t have a great insurgent candidate in a wide-open gov race, w/ all that is happening in the country/world right now. Does our screwed up system in CA just not produce people like Mandani or AOC? Top of the ticket is just another grim choice between neglect & destruction.

The sitting mayor of LA, supporting the elimination of thousands of jobs in her city, right before a contested election. I hope she loses. I wish I could say the same for the scumbag gov candidate, but his opponent is worse… and our system allows no other option in the general.

Ah, Fine Art, home of the original gatekeepers. Screw those jerks. Art is art. Enjoy it or don't. Hassling other people for enjoying what speaks to them is pretty shitty. (I say that as a guy who makes and occasionally sells paintings that aren't made for commercial purposes.)
