When I got out of college, we could pay rent in the Bay Area by waiting tables or temping or working at a bookstore.

There is NO way that anyone can pay rent with those jobs any longer, let alone save for a down payment. The mismatch between wages and rents/down payments/mortgages is a total catastrophe in so many parts of the country.

I finished Anne Applebaum's Autocracy Inc. (2024) this afternoon. It's a pre-Trump second term examination of the relationship between autocratic states and aspects of global capital. It reads as the establishment / Atlantic class landing where @sarahkendzior.bsky.social has been since the 2010s.

I was going through it, y'all. Imagine being in your third year at Evergreen and then spending your weekend training for chemical warfare in a damn gas mask and charcoal suit. I had capital F feelings.

I had my feet firmly planted in two different worlds.

On February 8th and 9th 2003, I attended my active duty training at McChord and went through a NBC (nuclear/ biological/ chemical warfare) refresher training. I spent most of the weekend in MOPP4, drinking crappy canteen water through a dirty rubber straw that worked about one fourth of the time, and trying to figure out how to finish reading Democracy in America for my Tuesday seminar through my fogged up gas mask. When the MOPP level was lowered we trained for aeromedical evacuations loading and off loading C-17s, a C-9, and Army Blackhawks.

Forever Wars will destroy the nation's soul. This is somehow still EXTREMELY relevant.

This is what war does to people.

The normalization of war is the normalization of the most vile and animalistic aspects of the human psyche. War requires horrible things to be done to innocent people, unfortunate personal sacrifices to be made, and morals to be compromised on both sides--it should never become commonplace or background. War is the most important function of a state. It alters its soul and should be entered into judiciously. What I heard last weekend were souls altered by war. It is no accident the great dystopian literature of the last century took place within unending and ambiguous wars. When war becomes Musak for the masses it destroys the soul of a republic. Thucydides understood this more than anyone and we may soon share Athens' fate.
