I got asked how I made the testing rig for my recent experiments with Apple’s on-device LLM. Instead of explaining, I made an app you can download for macOS Tahoe that lets you test your own prompts. natbuckley.co.uk/2025/07/02/i...

A week-ish ago I wrote about my experiments with an on-device LLM Apple released for use by apps on the latest beta OSes. A local LLM might be useful in places where you would never use a hosted LLM like ChatGPT, so I wanted to see what’s possible to do with it. natbuckley.co.uk/2025/06/20/d...

I asked for a reply on what actions my MP is taking to uphold the manifesto commitment to “remove indignities for trans people who deserve recognition and acceptance”.

I sent a paper letter to my Lab MP about my experiences of being harassed in toilets for using “the wrong one” by (presumably cis) women—something which began 10+ yrs ago when I started presenting more androgynously. I argued that the ruling will embolden the bigots, in addition to being unworkable.

Very moved by Paul’s clear, evidenced and well articulated letter to his MP about trans rights. I’m especially grateful because the issue is too emotional for me to bring this degree of thoughtfulness to the table po-ru.com/2025/04/26/a...

This is absolutely fantastic. Such a simple idea, but it’s mind blowing to me that the current crop of presentation software is not capable of presenting interactive prototypes anywhere near this well

Yes, probably, depending on context! In the book most charts show the average by default, so you can also quickly gauge how far off the value is

I’m surprised this visual approach isn’t more common. I’ve been in so many meetings trying to figure out if a suspicious data point is a call to action or meaningless noise where this kind of thing could have saved so much time. So what’s stopping this from becoming a really popular idea?

Though the only real example of this — that I’ve seen — is the sleep tracking data in the iOS fitness app using a visual indicator to show when data is within my “normal” range. Apple also applied the same idea to non-time series data, to highlight the status of multiple variables at once.

In the 90’s, Donald Wheeler published a book about what he called a process behaviour chart, where a visual indicator communicates the range of expected values. It’s such a simple idea! Though I’d call it the expected range chart.

This mistake is over-interpreting any high or low values as signal, when in reality those values often represent predictable variation.

I wrote a love letter to a cool, but underused chart type from the 90's, designed to help avoid one of the most common mistakes people make when analysing time-series data

I briefly went to NYC for work last week. I found a coffee shop which served Earl Grey, so I asked for it with milk, and received what I can only describe as an Earl Grey cappuccino. What you’re looking at here is true innovation.

Not only I didn’t get what I needed, I also didn’t really learn anything in the process, whether about the project itself or about how to prompt better to get what I need. So it felt like a waste of time.

I had a similar experience trying to get it to give me usable code for a project I was working on, which it seemingly couldn’t do, despite my best effort. In the end it was quicker to read the documentation, understand it, and write my own code

I wrote an article for The Modern House where I put together ideas showing how the Energy Performance Certificates could be even more useful to people looking for a new home. Homes that are more efficient are also cheaper to run, and will have lower CO2 emissions. 🧵

The breakdown of property's energy performance shows the rating of each component of the score—walls, roof, the heating system, and so on. Brains process visuals much faster than they do words. There's an opportunity to add visuals to help people scan info quickly.
