For example: if 11 DAs categorize dismissals differently, then whose job is it to figure out what-means-what for the statewide system? It’s just a big mess.

I am of the mind that the legislature should be stronger in mandating record keeping practices, while also funding the systems needed. Part of the reason non-compliance is possible is because in spite of the DAs operating under one criminal code, they have discretion on record keeping.
110
Nasser Eledroos @nasser.wiki · 06/08/2026
To an extent, I do think they could comply. But the labor of producing a one-time extract out of DAMION vs repeated ongoing efforts are very different tasks. That said, DAMION’s current state is convenient. But I can’t prove malicious non-compliance.

Yeah, I remember. He was also very interested in the data itself, which helped tremendously. Massachusetts suffers both from a lack of interest in data-as-policy, but also the fact that this is used by every DA in a county-based statewide system.

So no, it doesn’t work, it is producing tremendous waste, and is a risk to the agencies themselves that handle confidential information about people who are otherwise in an incredibly vulnerable point in their lives — defendant or victim.
120
Nasser Eledroos @nasser.wiki · 06/08/2026
Every criminal justice agency in the state types up documents into a records system, and then sends it to the next agency via a paper file. They type up information from other databases - like human API’s.
120
Nasser Eledroos @nasser.wiki · 06/08/2026
Moreover, it is so wasteful that the Mass criminal justice system can't just share data. Having people print out typed documents just to re-enter them by hand at the next agency stop is ridiculous. It leads to human error and then people in and out of the system don’t trust the data!
020
Nasser Eledroos @nasser.wiki · 06/08/2026
It also doesn’t work!! Like, with my own eyes, I saw someone doing quality control by assuming a defendant’s race or sex. I could probably write a whole piece just on the data quality issues… maybe I will.

And even what SF is doing in their use of the system is better than what the Massachusetts DAs do. I interviewed one of Gascon’s analysts and at least you guys had extra integrations that MA does not have. Still, not great.

Just so awful that people cannot convene for this. Think just of the lessons that won’t be shared, conversations and ideas to fight rising fascism and authoritarianism that won’t be sparked. I hope RightsCon emerges and is able to try again. What a loss.

Loss is just so weird. Haven’t seen an old friend in 16 years, and learned he passed today. When we were young, I remember feeling that — beside him — I could be more. Not more in any quantifiable metric we define a thing. But a permission to be more. I enjoyed it. Thinking of him as I read this.
