As Pride Month rolls around again, here is my list of Queer Films Directed by Women spanning 111 years from 1912 to 2023. Some are explicit in their themes, some are merely queer-coded, but all are interesting, and many were made by queer filmmakers. Happy Pride! 💗💜💙 letterboxd.com/nannina/list...

I'm disturbed by any description of Leni Riefenstahl's TIEFLAND that doesn't disclose the fact that she used Romani concentration camp internees as extras, who then were sent to Auschwitz, and most were murdered there. TIEFLAND's legacy is it is the most morally reprehensible film ever made.
The Kino Lorber website says: "In her second film as director, Leni Riefenstahl returned to the mountain settings which had made her a star of German cinema. TIEFLAND (Lowlands) dramatizes the conflicts between the shepherds on the slopes of the Spanish Pyrenees and the power-hungry Don Sebastian (Bernhard Minetti) who diverts their water to the plains below, in order to feed his cattle. Don Sebastian becomes smitten with Martha, an exotic Spanish dancer (Riefenstahl), and schemes to add her to his menagerie. Martha tries to broker a peace between the cattle baron and the shepherds, but Don Sebastian’s greed is insatiable, and a violent confrontation seems inevitable. TIEFLAND was filmed in 1932, but the footage was confiscated by Allied forces during World War II. It wasn’t until 1954 that Riefenstahl was able to complete the film—in spite of some of the footage having been lost in the interim. This edition of TIEFLAND was restored in 4K from the original 35mm negative."

Really fascinating analysis of interracial dynamics in POOL OF LONDON and THE STORY OF A THREE-DAY PASS. Both films are very worthwhile viewing, and I was really interested to read a comparison.

Opinion. Mine. If I have to fund it myself, set up my own foundation, or campaign personally, there should be an urgency to restore lesser/unknown classic Black films—aka "race films"—that are neglected or considered underwhelming. Black classic films are just as valuable to the history of cinema.

On this installment, I'm joined again by Nannina, and we're talking about some great female film directors! After a bit of initial chat about Dorothy Arzner and her pre-Code movie Nana (which Nannina and I managed to watch together recently!).. we move onto the main double bill.... a chat about The Hitch-Hiker (1953, Ida Lupino) and Point Break (1991, Kathryn Bigelow). Fun is had. Enjoy! And Vaya Con Dios. 0.00 Intro/Preamble 0.16 The Hitch-Hiker 1.07 Point Break You can find the show on Twitter at @EGoat_pod (or tweet at me on @D_Faggiani) and email us with any feedback on escapegoatpod@gmail.com. All our episodes are on Spotify, our YouTube channel, and Apple Podcasts. Do share and enjoy. We also have a Patreon - any amount of money will get you early access to episodes, and help support the show. Nannina is a screenwriter, who procrastinates at writing by going down deep research wormholes into alternate dimensions. She supports her writing habit by making coffee, and can be found on Twitter and Bluesky via @NanninaGilder talking about early women filmmakers. Reminder to new users here: Though Dorothy Arzner was the only woman director working solo within the studio system of Golden Age Hollywood, directors like Esther Eng, Eloyce Gist, Dorothy Davenport were also making films in the US in the 30s & racism is very much a factor in Eng & Gist's erasure.

Today's the great Ida Lupino's birthday! Acting from her youth, she became a pioneer in indie filmmaking. Writing, producing & directing films on controversial subjects, she was very careful to keep the censors on her side, giving her remarkable freedom in what she was able to put on screen.
