My favourite Annie Dillard quote, from THE WRITING LIFE
Who will teach me to write? a reader wanted to know.

The page, the page, that eternal blankness, the blankness of eternity which you cover slowly, affirming time’s scrawl as a right and your daring as necessity; the page, which you cover woodenly, ruining it, but asserting your freedom and power to act, acknowledging that you ruin everything you touch but touching it nevertheless, because acting is better than being here in mere opacity; the page, which you cover slowly with the crabbed thread of your gut; the page in the purity of its possibilities; the page of your death, against which you pit such flawed excellences as you can muster with all your life’s strength: that page will teach you to write.

in K2's defense, it's not, like, picking innocents off with a long range sniper rifle from its vast height while they mind their own business in their little sheep herding village a faraway valley. K2 is just killing mosquitos that land on its body.

This is orthogonal to your complaints but may I also note that it drives me completely nuts how AI text that's (supposedly) making an argument equivocates and hedges beyond all reason. It's so insulting when our overlords are goddamn namby-pamby *cowards*.

While it is easy to mix up John Baron for the other Baron, take a closer look. Is your Baron soaking in a tub of oil to fully heal himself before he returns to the rigors of dictatorship, or has he slapped on some paint on his discolored bodyparts and pretending it's normal to pass out in court?

Just a regular glass container - for one cup of rice I use a 3.8qt bowl (it was the second largest in a 4 pc nesting set). I'm south Indian, trust me, I care deeply about rice myself. This method works even better for basmati rice, use 3 cups water there.

I'm sorry if this is a very stupid comment, but have you tried cooking rice in a microwave in a glass bowl? Because I'm here to tell you it works perfectly every time. 1 cup jasmine rice + 2.5 cups water (a bit more water than for a rice cooker), microwave 12-14 mins on high, let sit with lid 5 min.

I read for the first time 3 years ago and I was *horrified*! It had been sold to me as a romance by pop culture all my life! Reading this book with that expectation was one of the most disturbing and discombobulating reading experiences ever.

AND WHAT ABOUT ACCOUNTABILITY. Jesus Christ. If they think abolishing ICE is a step too far, how about some basic accountability for the laws that have been broken and the lives that have been illegally upended (or just ended). Come on. Accountability. At the very least.

I admire your work in getting men to move left. But rn you're defending the indefensible, man. If you're genuinely acting in good faith (& I fully believe you are) you HAVE to be able to take basic feedback like "wtf man, don't defend Nazis" without puffing out your chest and acting all offended.

India in the 1970s isn't USA in 2025. And ugh, my pet peeve is when people trot out ~electing women just for the sake of electing women~ when the only real issue is voters rejecting v.v. well qualified candidates solely for being women! A LOT to celebrate in ZM's win, but a win for feminism? Nah.

He literally doesn't think having a Nazi tattoo is a bad thing as long as one is not a "real" Nazi. There's screencaps of his reddit comments where he argues and argues that double bolt SS tattoos are fine - a Black guy in his infantry corp had it, and you can't be a Nazi if you're Black. Checkmate.

You don't have to be proven a Nazi in order for your Nazi tattoo to be unacceptable. This is the same argument as white people use when they say "But he doesn't have a racist bone in his body." FFS.

So there's clear proof here that he knew it was a Nazi symbol back in 2020, yet he's acting like he's just found out its super fashy. Completely indefensible and everyone who is going up to bat for this man needs a fucking word with themselves. Also, Blackwater? Fucking hell...

For the record, this apology is just a string of bad excuses for completely inexcusable behavior as well. **This guy literally said women shouldn't get so drunk as to get assaulted.** Shortly before he said that, he got so drunk he got a Nazi tattoo.

Fair enough. I admit I have been in a continuous state of lowkey grrr about Bernie since he dissed Planned Parenthood way back when, and my words here may be tinged with the bile. I'll go scream into a pillow now.

Yeah he's not an outright murderous Nazi or corrupt but there are way too many eerie similarities. e.g. Bernie never released his taxes as a candidate! In 2015/2016 AND in 2019/2020 he kept saying "I'll release them in a couple of weeks". Uncanny. (He finally did it a day before super tues 2020 smh)

Never forget, in 2016 Bernie platformed Tulsi Gabbard & made her famous, courted Joe Rogan & Killer Mike, endorsed anti-abortion candidates + attacked Planned Parenthood. If they said nice things about him he liked them, if they didn't endorse him he attacked them. Bernie's always been "our" Trump.

WTF? No. This was just a very long string of excuses. It was not even an apology let alone a good one. He took no responsibility, he blamed what he said on his mental illnesses (i.e. he couldn't help it) and on being a different person back then (i.e. he doesn't have to take responsibility now).

nandinis.bsky.social @nandinis.bsky.social · 18/10/2025
It's just a string of excuses. He says at the time of his life when he wrote "the most indefensible comments" he was suffering from depression and PTSD, his thoughts & feelings were still "rough around the edges" from "feeling entirely isolated and very very angry" due to having been in Afghanistan
