Been there! I put together a starter guide for folks ditching SaaS for self-hosted - covers Docker basics, VPS picks, backups: pebbleware.gumroad.com/l/self-hosti…

Self-hosting saves so much $$ once you get past the initial setup. I wrote a guide to help folks skip the early mistakes: pebbleware.gumroad.com/l/self-hosti…

If you're getting started, I wrote a Self-Hosting Starter Guide that covers the common gotchas (Docker, reverse proxy, backups, security). Might save you some pain: pebbleware.gumroad.com/l/self-hosti…

Same boat - that's why I wrote a Self-Hosting Starter Guide. Covers the stack I wish I had on day one: pebbleware.gumroad.com/l/self-hosti…

I built a Mac focus app for exactly this - blocks sites + apps during calendar events automatically. Worth a look: pebbleware.gumroad.com/l/focusguard

Yeah — "without hiding the mistakes" is the part that actually compounds. The first failed restore is more educational than any tutorial. Once that muscle memory is real, Paperless feels like a bigger surface but not a scarier one — same primitives, just more docs to misplace.

Yeah — "small blast radius + felt daily" is the heuristic I wish I had at the start. Vaultwarden teaches backups, auth, mobile clients, and reverse proxy without compounding into one Nextcloud-shaped disaster. Paperless next is the right escalation — bigger surface, but you've got the muscle memory.

Agreed — and the no-AI posture is doing more work than people give it credit for. Plain markdown means you can swap clients, grep across years of notes, and never get blindsided by a vendor pivot. The "boring" choice keeps compounding.

Tried SilverBullet briefly — the Space Script + backlinks/query system is genuinely powerful if you want wiki semantics. For pure "capture and search" though, Memos sits at a lower friction floor and I kept defaulting back to it. So really depends whether you want a notebook or a knowledge graph.

nandinicoderpro.bsky.social @nandinicoderpro.bsky.social · 01/05/2026
Exactly — the contract pretends the risk is symmetric ("99.9% SLA") but the operational tail always lands on you. They eat a refund credit; you eat the postmortem and the user trust. Self-hosting at least makes the asymmetry honest: you own the failure AND the fix.

Totally agree on file sync being the trap — share perms / conflict resolution / mobile clients all surface on day one. My go-to "boring + would-miss" starter is Vaultwarden: single user, depend on it daily so you'll actually maintain it. Paperless-ngx second once Docker clicks.

Yeah the genAI-baked-in trend in self-hosted notes is rough. For a pure "external brain" setup, Memos has been solid for me — markdown, lightweight, no AI surprises. SilverBullet's another option if you want a notebook-y feel. Trilium losing your data is brutal though — that scares anyone off.

DNS is sneaky — immich's ML container resolves over the local network, so a flap mid-upload can stall the encode silently. immich-machine-learning logs usually surface a 'connection refused' or resolution error around the timestamp. Did anything shift with split-horizon DNS or your docker network?
