One of the best parts of researching the Cambridge Mysteries is uncovering gems like this. The dog from Cambridge's Pussycat Boutique reportedly wandered into a rival shop and peed all over the trouser display. Sometimes history is stranger than fiction.

Another milestone. I've just finished the line edits for Book 2 of the Cambridge Mysteries, and it's finally back with my publisher. This one is set in Cambridge in 1978, as the country edges into the Winter of Discontent. DCI Jonathan Rievaulx is joined by the newly promoted DS Emily Carter.

In Cambridge 1977, tradition still shaped everyday life. The law was beginning to change, but attitudes took longer. It's the world Emily Carter steps into in The Orchid Mystery, where solving a murder means navigating not only secrets but the expectations placed on a young woman detective.

Such a beautiful, still morning on the Loch. It's good to be back in Scotland.

Cambridge, 1977. Women were a relatively new presence in parts of the University. Some colleges remained male-only. Hence, DC Emily Carter's role in The Orchid Mystery investigating murder in a changing world. #TheOrchidMystery #CambridgeMysteries #HistoricalMystery #CrimeFiction #Cambridge

People who read mysteries are essentially volunteering to be lied to for 300 pages, then getting oddly offended when the detective solves it before they do... oh, but don't we enjoy it! #mysteryreader #crimefiction #amreading #murdermystery #booklover

3/3 – they write an essay-length email promising exposure, success, possibly world domination. And, tucked away somewhere, the small matter of a fee. Honestly, if they put half as much effort into reading the book as they do into the pitch, we might be getting somewhere!

2/3 At this point, I can practically hear rustle of the Scammers R Us crib sheet. The tells are wonderfully consistent: – sent from a Gmail address – they explain my own book to me (helpful) – they repeat my bio (in case I’ve forgotten who I am)

1/3 I get about 4–5 emails a day now, all trying to part me from my money in one inventive way or another. And they almost always begin the same way: “I came across your book recently, and one thing stood out immediately…”

My book is set in 1977 Cambridge. In that year,The Sex Pistols were banned from performing at Cambridge’s Corn Exchange! A reflection of the university's dominance over the town and highlighting friction between punk culture and local authorities

A lot of these posts asking authors to “share your book cover, blurb, and links” are not about helping you promote your work. They are fishing for authors to target with paid services. If someone really wanted to promote your book, they would simply share it. Be careful who you give your details to.

So, there are ARCs who downloaded a copy of my novel to review it before publication, who are scammers of various types. Where do these people get off? I thought 25 people were reviewing my book. It turns out it's probably fewer than 5. Gutted.
