But like everywhere, most Chinese citizens are barely aware VPNs exist and don't know how to set one up so they just use the censored Chinese web and often don't know there even is another side to a story than the PRC line.

Using VPNs to bypass the "Great Firewall" is illegal, I think, but one of those laws only enforced when Xi or someone decide they want you in jail rather than something a random modder is likely to get even a cease and desist order for.

My understanding is that the PRC has realized they can't be only halfway on the international internet, so they censor local sites and keep many foreign sites off the open internet but haven't tried to actually stop VPN use nationwide.

Also of course many Americans are immigrants or descendants of immigrants and are fluent enough in Chinese they may want a Chinese version of an English mod they like and do submods with chinese titles and English as a second fileset.

I heard banned after a DLC lead to India having a focus path that gave them more claim on Tibet than China has. Also China isn't *that* strict at keeping people from accessing American Steam with VPNs so there may still be a significant mainland community.

Strangely mainly Japanese anime, possibly because there's submods translating those which rely on the base mod but aren't linked so it's not necessarily obvious they exist.

Other Paradox games regularly have totally untranslated Chinese mods in Most Subscribed.

Apparently HoI4 is not on Chinese Steam at all so it's unsurprising there's not a lot of Chinese stuff on the Workshop and it gets relatively few downloads.

A core is a territory that is generally acknowledged to rightfully and properly belong to a given country and the alt-history focus trees get pretty crazy with handing this out, and China likes to pretend Tibet was always Chinese.
000
namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 3h
I'm told it actually is banned in China so some but not a lot. Apparently it's because China cannot "core" Tibet and the breaking point was a DLC that gave India a silly Silk Road Empire focus tree where they got to "core" Tibet.

From what I've heard I'd strike it from inherently problematic because it's about Germany *not* being Nazis, but both Neo-Nazis and anti-Nazis tend to conflate Nazis and Imperial Germany so I'm sure it has what r/40klore calls "Black Templar Fans".

Tanya is often jokingly called "[young girl] Hitler" but actually she's in an Imperial German army where WW1 started in the late 20s or so. No Holocaust and Tanya herself is constantly worrying about a war crimes tribunal so she sticks strictly to the letter of the law.

Other famous "WW2" Japanese series is Tanya the Evil, about an asshole HR guy who is murdered by a guy he fired and "Being X" reincarnates him as a female mage in alt-history Europe as a German orphan named Tanya.

Titular Valkyria are the magical girls, and basically they're almost gods with the right powers and gear. The alt-Holocast doesn't get onscreen much, but basically there's Jewish analogues who are blamed for a massive disaster actually caused by unrelated Valkyria long ago.
131
namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 6h
Valkyria Chronicles is set in magic WW2 with serial numbers filed off where "The Empire" is essentially if Nazi Germany also owned Russia and the first game is basically the not-Belgian militia unexpectedly holding up the invasion long enough for not-France to respond. Map is just directly Europe.

The closest major HoI mod I've heard of to this is Equestria At War, a My Little Pony mod, but there are many Japanese franchises he could mean rather than a mod.

No, see, standard cameras are vastly superior to both because Machine Learning.

Pretty sure he's aiming for selling image recognition software for regular cameras to replace radar. It's connected to how he tried making teslas autonomus with only cameras, no LIDAR, and refuses to admit it was a mistake.

And targeting radar *can* see them but the planes are usually able to shoot first.

My understanding is that it's a Red Queen's Race and has been holding at a level where the US needs to take out big fixed radars with missles first before sending in the stealth planes.

Hang on, you can just put up surveillance cameras on public property? This feels like a scenario where the police should just get a county electrician to uninstall them immediately and launch a possibly criminal investigation into who put them up.
090
namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Y'know, if I left something on public property the government had ordered me to take down I'm pretty sure some officials would just rip it down and possibly bill me for the labor and it would be up to me to try to get it back.

It was, and the overall climate change topic left me knowing things like "actually if a plant needs a lot of care to grow in your environment it probably takes less CO2 to import it from South America than grow it locally". Transport is a surprisingly small portion of emissions per pound.

I think the program left me more equipped for what *I* needed to use humanities for, like digging through research papers on contentious topics with a critical eye, than a survey course would.
000
namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Don't think so; as this was a "humanities for engineers" program that wanted to do that in a rigorous way rather than be easy it was more about what archeology could tell us about their use of materials and the impact of drought.

Oh, those are both helpful, but coordination is what meant we were able to basically wipe out every predator that decided to try to make us regular prey with stone tools.

I've also heard PT gets over-weighted a lot in officer promotions because it's easiest to measure, in much the same way lines of code is for programmers except slightly helpful instead of terrible.

Lions don't do it much either, actually, because humans killed all the predators who regularly attack us.
050
namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
With a spear they actually have decent odds one-on-one. With a gun humans dominate.

"Humans have for many centuries interacted with *other* apex predators"
070
namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
No? We kill lions with spears and now guns. "Apex Predator" means the predator that kills all lesser predators, not the physically strongest.
0110
namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
That is why we invented "five people with spears". You notice how we don't get killed by lions very often lately?

namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Yeah, as far as I can tell you just need to meet the minimum physical standards to "be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us" and you have done all the PT you need these days.

I don't think the technical skill with digital brush strokes creates an uncrossible gap with high art and think it may hit a point where you can't tell if something is from an AI or a hack human soon, but I doubt AI will ever have artistic vision.

Got two AP credits for history, took the special gen-ed classes for specifically the intersection of science and humanities (stuff like the fall of urban native American settlements in North America likely from climate change) and took three medieval history courses for fun in spare hours.

namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Keep in mind that with good colleges being so expensive even students like me who love history aren't gonna add even a semester to their STEM degrees for it.

Also less important if you aren't in the Cold War when taking the class; not surprised to hear there was more focus on the immediate leadup to the USSR in the 80s

Got a 5 on the test and if you'd asked me what war Tsushima was in I couldn't do more than say Japan was probably involved because the name sounds Japanese.

namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
In my AP world course I'm pretty sure it got cut for time entirely since there was zero chance it'd be the subject of an essay question other than document based, and the teacher knew perfectly well 80% of the students would basically check out after the test.

namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
And the priorities were the World Wars and the US civil rights movement and there wasn't the time to properly cover even those.
010
namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Also my primary school experience was that every history course was overloaded with content and anything past the American Civil War was rushed through as it became clear we weren't going to be able to cover everything on the cirriculum in time.
110
namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I mean, I'm pretty sure in my AP world class it appeared in the textbook as like a paragraph to a page in "how Japan went from Commadore Perry to Pearl Harbor", which is not really enough to base analogies on, and for many college students that's their only serious World History course.

My impression from his videoes on the affair was basically that getting the fleet the admiral was handed to the destination ready for combat both in terms of material condition of the ships and training was flatly impossible for anyone.
050
namehereguy.bsky.social @namehereguy.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I'm not sure if this was in class or in casual history reading but I first encountered it as basically "the first sign Japan was now a serious modern nation and an early instance of the territorial adventures they'd embark on leading to WW2".

Russia did not have one and did not realize this. The neutrality laws of the time allowed them to refuel on coal at neutral ports so they were able to complete the journey and enough of the crews did not die to operate the ships on arrival.

As in the navy was mostly commanded by nobility based on rank and age without regard to naval experience and, well, Bret recently had a post about the necessary components for getting a true blue-water navy that can go around the world away from bases.

I don't know anything outside his videoes and what I got from a manga nicknamed "yuri Sparta" that's a romance set in an alternate world post-war among female military cadets but my impression is that Russia's problem was more planning and leadership than tech.

The navel youtuber Drachinifel has episodes on Russia's attempt to relieve the naval side with a fleet sent from their Western ports entitled "voyage of the damned". They nearly triggered a war with Britain by panicking about imaginary torpedo boats.
