Haven't posted any food on a while so here is my brunch spread from Sunday. Salmon grilled on a cedar plank and served cold with a dill sauce was the star of the show.

Koshari-inspired pasta salad. We had baharat spice blend left over from the time we made traditional koshari (the national dish of Egypt) and I used it to flavor a vinaigrette. (Koshari is great, but it had several parts, and is a lot of effort for just three people.)

Vietnamese coconut lemongrass pulled pork rice paper rolls with a savory peanut dipping sauce and a chili lime dipping sauce. We made the batch of pork in the Breville Fast Slow Pro several months ago in cool weather, and vacuum packed half of it. Recipe by Nagi Maehashi.

Finished this shawl before I even got this in-progress photo posted. Now I'm back in The Slump Again.

Knitting project 🧶 loosely piled on a table: Ambah's Woolsia Shawl, in a handspun merino/alpaca/tussah silk gradient yarn. It's dark mauve at the starting point and meanders through mauves, soft purples, and warm tans. The rest of the ball implies some creams will be next.

The holy basil is extremely happy with the high temp/high humidity weather we've been having. First holy basil stir fry of the season has ground pork and eggplant. Heat level: 4 birdseye chilies in 3 servings.

As promised, I did not cook dinner last night. Monday we had pulled pork with mole rojo in homemade tortillas, slaw with quick pickled red onion and serrano peppers, and corn on the cob dressed with olive oil and a guajillo and ancho salt.

Here's the knitted shrug I'm going to rip out. I'm having some difficulty finding another construction that will play nice with the striping of the handspun yarn.

Fusion dinner. Pressure-cooked Vietnamese coconut lemongrass pulled pork in fresh homemade bao, with a peanut sauce made from the reduced cooking liquid. I didn't get the carrot and daikon pickled on time, so I made a tomato and cucumber salad with fresh lime juice and mint.

Thai beef noodle salad. There was no Napa cabbage at two grocery stores, so we substituted half romaine and half green leafy parts of bok choy. Four red Thai chilies went into the dressing. So much chopping. Tired now.

Technically, we ended up with a central peninsula instead of an island. We were able to put in an island vent hood and ducting that goes straight up through the roof. The glass canopy cuts down on the hood's visual weight quite a bit.

A rustic Sicilian dinner: fresh hand-rolled pasta tubes with a tomato, basil, and almond pesto. The pasta instructions said to coil strips of dough around a skewer about the size of a #knitting needle. Hmm, what sort of pointy sticks do I have that suit that description? Swallow casein straights. 🧶

Okay, so full transparency. I did dip it in a pool after it said it was too hot.
I was told not to do that before doing so, but my hubris said "nah these things are waterproof" and into the swim it went.
I go in the pool when I want to cool down, why can't my phone?

My scarf project “in progress” (blocked, but ends not yet woven in). Volna pattern, light fingering weight 2-ply handspun.

Scarf pattern is large short row alternating triangles of garter stitch with an eyelet row every eight rows. The yarn has irregular medium-length color changes of rust, purple, blue-gray, and tan (think: Badlands cliff face colors).

After dinner last night, we shoved the remaining half of the short ribs back in the oven. After another TWO+ HOURS (we'd already cooked them for four) they finally got tender. So today we shredded the meat and made bao to put it in.

Short ribs oven-braised in Korean barbecue sauce, soy-braised potatoes, and spicy cucumber salad. I did not have the spoons for this today, but I’d already put it off one day, and the meat was expensive.

Shrimp pad see ew. The noodles clumped, and we weren't able to get a proper char, but it was still delicious. Fresh rice noodles are so tender! I made the prik nam som from Fresno peppers that had been in the produce drawer a while.
