Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 26/11/2024The problem is that you can't teach people who don't want to learn. Access to information is greater than ever before. We have to give people a better reason to pursue knowledge. 000
Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 26/11/2024Could it be that consciousness remains? I don't doubt that the brain is responsible for generating an adaptive model of our environment, I'm just not so sure the brain is generating consciousness. Certainly, the individual dies with the body, but does awareness? 100

Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 23/11/2024I'm not in a position to dive into this right now, but it seems very interesting. I will definitely revisit! 010

Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 22/11/2024I go through old sketchbooks and journals, and it's like someone else made them. Surreal. 020
Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 22/11/2024Freedom and autonomy are the highest ideal. If I recognize that everyone else has that same right to freedom and autonomy, I should not act in such a way that infringes on those rights. This can be boiled down to one word: Consent. 020

Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 22/11/2024I suppose I would if the bathrooms were genderless but still communal. I guess you're right. 1100

Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 22/11/2024If the bathroom is for a single person at a time, sure. But if my 7 year old daughter walks into a public restroom and a fully grown man strolls in after (not as in literally pursuing) her, that would make me uncomfortable. 1120
Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 22/11/2024I agree. Not every passing conversation needs to be had at such a high level of accuracy and clarity. If you paid attention and digested the content, reading vs. listening doesn't matter. But saying they're the same is just not correct. 110
Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 22/11/2024How is it even a debate? There are circumstances that lend themselves to reading and circumstances that lend themselves to audiobooks. Anyone who reads physical books is almost guaranteed to listen to audiobooks. The reverse is not true. I wonder why that is? 160
Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 22/11/2024Listening and reading are different. One is not better than the other. It's okay to say "Listening is not reading" without implying listening is somehow less effective for consuming written word. 2100
Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 22/11/2024No, it doesn't come off as ableist to any reasonable person. Any sane person realizes there are always exceptions and variables. Not every statement needs an asterisk so that every possible circumstance is included. 41871
Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 22/11/2024This debate is so ridiculous. Both sides of it come from insecurity. Reading and listening are NOT the same, but it doesn't make one better than the other. Is a hammer better than a screwdriver? This whole dialogue is driven by people desperate to be perceived as better than others. 010

Austin Roper @namarupa.bsky.social · 22/11/2024It's not the device. It's the content that matters. Same is true for books. 5710
