And while Draco harboured a fascination with potions, Theo was enraptured by muggle drugs. Both interests had led the two friends to engage in a rather odd form of quid pro quo. The terms of this unspoken agreement, in theory, were quite simple. Theo would volunteer as a human test subject for Draco’s brews, and in turn Draco would be an active participant in Theo’s recreational pursuits.

In practice, the arrangement was an absolute shit show.

In one such iteration, Draco had been exploring memory potions and had inadvertently caused Theo to hallucinate—or rather relive—a lecture from their head of house in their childhood. Draco recognized precisely which one when Theo covered his ears and started singing the chorus of “Hoggy Warty Hogwarts'' which Draco had seen him do only once before. At that time, it was a desperate bid to drown out what had been a horrifying attempt at sexual education from Severus. A nightmarish experience, and one that all the fourth year Slytherins involved had—in a unanimous fashion—decided to never speak of again.

And so Draco learned that his potion could extract traumatic memories. All of Theo’s trauma considered, they were lucky it hadn’t been worse. Still, Theo had retaliated in kind, procuring a similarly hallucinatory substance that left them both in a sort of fugue state for what felt like hours after it had worn off. Draco couldn’t remember everything that had happened during their “trip” as Theo had called it, but it was certainly no holiday. Neither had been able to meet the other’s eye for several weeks after.

Blaise called the arrangement unhealthy and codependent and Draco did not disagree. But he would be damned if he folded before Theo did.

“First of all, it’s not muggle, it's magical!” Theo continued to campaign as Draco rifled through his hanging robes. “I think Rowle brewed it.”

Draco scoffed. “You’re not helping your case.” But Theo didn’t need to make a case. Draco was going to take the potion and they both knew it.

Once Draco had changed into his evening attire the three young men settled in their usual places around the fireplace—Draco and Blaise in armchairs and Theo sprawled out on the couch across from them, the potion still in his hand.

“What does it do exactly?” Draco asked.

Theo pinched the vial between two fingers and held it up in front of his face. “Think of it as a suppressant to your conscience. Lasts only a couple of hours but while it’s in your system you’ll be immune to feelings of guilt or shame.”

“How is that different than just getting sloshed?”

“You’re still in control. Your moral compass isn’t turned off, just your reactions to it.”

This was more insidious than a calming drought. What Theo was describing was apathy. Ruthlessness. A servant of the Dark Lord with no conscience or remorse. This was the type of potion that could sink its teeth into you.

Draco scowled. “Fuck it, alright.”

Theo pulled another vial from his robes and tossed it across the sitting area to Draco who caught it smoothly in his left hand—a third vial appeared in Theo’s

“Blaise?” The grin on Theo’s face was downright devilish. “Care to join us?”

“I’m not the one partying with Death Eaters tonight.”

Theo shrugged. “You could be, it’s my house.”

“Tempting.” Blaise did not sound tempted.

“Suit yourself.”

Theo raised his vial in Draco’s direction, to which Draco quirked a brow. “No toasts this time?”

“Right, let’s see. May we never forget what is worth remembering.” Clearing his throat, Theo raised the vial higher. “Or remember what is best forgotten.”

“Cheers, mate.”
