You’d never know the meaning of unc or its origins in black culture if you looked to mainstream media.

Also special mention for Greenbanks by Dorothy Whipple - she's not my usual genre or writer but I loved her writing!

Shroud is in the lead for me, I also loved Children of Strife. The Annual Migration of Clouds was short and beautifully written. Glorious Exploits was a really weird but refreshing read and made me laugh a lot.

Looks like I should update my reading goals! I usually start out low to keep it achievable and without much pressure, but it's always nice to get to at least 36 by the end of the year.

Tried "Crown of Ash" today, so I could decide whether I should buy it ... Really enjoyed it AND it's gorgeous, so I guess my decision has been made 👀

Getting pampered today 🥰 After an amazing breakfast, we went out for an Indian Afternoon Tea and then off to a secluded little sauna in the woods with a cold little lake ✨

It's my birthday and my wonderful partner made me a "Kaiserschmarrn" for breakfast because I was sad the other day that I didn't have any in Germany 😋 Not only is he a great cook, he's also learning to make veganised recipes from my "home" 🥹

A plate of Kaiserschmarrn - crispy & fluffy chunks of torn pancake topped with icing sugar and served with a homemade plum compote with a beautiful dark red colour.

Planning a lino cut for printing with white on black really takes some tricky new ways of thinking and drawing 😅

Good day! Went to Norwich Games Con, bought little bits and bobs, then went back home with friends to play some boardgames: Foxglove Farm & Wingspan Pocket

When they commission you to draw a scenes with lots of characters, but you only know how to draw one face.

Photo of an illustrated book page with a gilded 12th century painting of Mary with baby Jesus on her lap surrounded by 6 angels - 4 of the angels have pretty much the exact same face as Mary, the two others look similar to each other and the baby. Everyone carries a very sus and judgy look on their face

To this day, every time someone mentions "The Hobbit" I get an instant craving for a proper slice of sourdough bread with butter and honey because the book made me grab myself a portion while I read it several times thanks to the Hobbit food descriptions. Like a little Pavlovian honey badger! 🦡

5. Where I buy books: - New physical books I order at my local bookshop (Book Hive) or Waterstones - and I like buying books on trips as a treat - Second hand book shops - Digital & audio books, I'm afraid still often through the Kindle store, or in Humble Bundles

010

n3rdybirdy | Susi Bauer @n3rdybirdy.bsky.social · 06/08/2026

4. Browsing Section: All of them 😂 I love going to the Book Hive on Norwich for browsing. In second-hand shops I usually check out the sales & illustrated books. I often look at the Sci-fi & Fantasy corner, the "What's new" tables, and boardgames shelf in Waterstones.

3. Favourite Genre I grew up a fantasy fan, but I've been leaning more towards sci-fi in the last 3 years. 🧝🛸 I am dubbing my favourite genre Empathy Sci-Fi: books about first contact, overcoming communication barriers, navigating differences across cultures & species! That's my jam 💕

Screenshot of Susi's Storygraph Genre Graph, showing fantasy in the lead with close to 150 books, Sci-fi second with close to 100 books, followed by Classics, Mystery, Historical, LGBTQIA+, Literary, Contemporary closer to the 50 books mark.
Horror and 37 more genres follow in the range of 0-50 books
