Bowler ... you like my little chapeau? Catch your eye? See the holes in it? They're bullet holes! Some darn fools took umbrage with my special brand of humour, and decided to take it out of my hide with hot lead. But I took it out of THEIR HIDES! No bullets can harm me! I'm way beyond that!

Death And His Sickle ... even Death can be given pause. Even Death can shrink at the enormity of what he has to do. Even Death can rebel against duty, and the age-old order of things. Even Death has a sense of morality. But the sickle, once raised, must then be used. In this Death envies the living.

Castle Idraka ... the snow cleared a bit then, and I could see the vague outlines of the castle. Even though what I saw at first was only a silhouette, I recognized it immediately. My research had been extensive and exhausting, but it had paid off. No matter that most of my fortune was gone ...

Colly ‘Crowbar’ Byrne ... he wasn’t a big guy, but people gave him a wide berth, cuz’ he always had his ’buddy’ handy. He’d prop it in the corner of his joint behind the bar, where it was handy, and he didn’t hesitate to use it. In fact, he notched the friggin’ bar every time he whacked somebody.

Proboscis ... we know that the extraordinary discoveries of John Bergin are associated with the beginnings of GenEng. It is clear his work acted as a springboard for the earliest GenEng criminals. This is a concept drawing that Genome Prime Labs used in the creation of their first GenEng creation.

Rord ... With his little legs, massive upper body, and mismatched arms, he wasn't too stable. Basically, he just kept falling over. So we retired him to guarding the moat. That way he could stay fearsome and, if he felt like he was going to tip, he could lean against the castle wall for support ...

Blood Tower 2 ... do you blame me for pausing at the end of the spit? Did you think I would march down the marshlands and broach the door in one swift, heroic motion? I had to pause to gather myself, to stil my heart, and try and believe that what I had come to do could be done by such a worm as I.

The Stratton Lane Slasher ... this drawing, dating from 1897, is an artist's interpretation of what this famous killer may have looked like. Of course, the testimony of the time is fragmentary, and seems to borrow from British accounts of the more famous Jack the Ripper.

Burg Vergitsky ... it was still, very still. I moved my oars slowly, and when they dipped into the water they made no sound. There was no hurry now. In minutes I would breach the shore, and step out of my boat - so quietly. For a minute I paused. Behind me my boat drifted away from the shore ...

Possum Warrior ... not a prepossessing appearance, but a ferocious little warrior was this one. Shrewd and analytical, he could use anger to his advantage in the pinches, and was a lot stronger than he looked. We lost him at Prana. He survived, but was too grievously wounded to return to combat.

The Crooked Stone ... there was a crooked stone, and there was a crooked man, and he knew he was fated to be there since the world began. There was a crooked staff, and a crooked path before him, and he knew his destiny lead him to the finality of all the doubly damned.

Sauradis ... my gran filled me with many tall tales when I was a little boy. She made them all up herself - no Grimm's or Hans Christian stuff for her. The Sauradis story was the one that scared me most. I like to tell it sometimes in memory of her.

Fate the Chess Player ... with a sweep of his hand and a placement one square to the right or the left of another square the direction of a life is set. That person will see others living life, perhaps 'even to the full', but they will never be able to move off their own square to truly live life.

The Dark Scribe ... many a long year had he honed his craft. He marshalled resources, and gathered materiel he would need. He cultivated the powerful for he knew he would require protection as he wrote. Then he lifted his pen to begin. He touched pen to paper and wrote one word to begin: Oriaste.

Obrodok ... it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen, and I had created it, molecule by molecule, with all the love I could muster. No purple tinged sunset, no mighty mountain peak, no gently waving grasses on a golden plain, no expanse of billowing, Boothian clouds could rival it's beauty.

Glind and Dralov ....Dralov's first blow was the killing blow, but Glind still roared defiance. It had been literally fixed in stone in this lonely place by the spells of Oriaste, and made an easy target for Oriaste's catspaw Dralov, but it would not die without howling a last curse at the world.

The Ghost of the Graveyard ... he was surprised it was so colourful. He thought it would manifest as a thin, gray mist. Instead, the colours were blinding, and he squinted to protect his eyes. But the energy that emanated from it was exactly what he expected: pure undiluted malevolance.

The Rayner’s Lane Creature ... the city began to breathe easier as the turn of the century approached. 1888 and Jack the Ripper seemed but a dim memory, and the Hoxton Werewolf was now dismissed as wild rumour mongering, and the excesses of a vulgar and undisciplined press.
