Lacking any other options for spending her time productively, she stood, found her sword where it was propped up against the wall, and stepped into the open space near the foot of Raffica’s bed. She drew it, gazed at her reflection in the blade for a moment, then sat the scabbard against the wall. Assuming a fighting stance, she raised the sword up and swung it down in one fluid motion.
The air in front of her winced.
She blinked. At first she dismissed the sound—surely she was just hearing things?—but, thinking better, she lowered her sword and stepped forward to grab at the air. It recoiled away from her, shimmering into color and texture to reveal its true form, that of a short, dark-haired catgirl.
Niel: “What the hell is with you Humans!? How do you keep seeing me while I’m invisible, huh? That’s the one thing you aren’t meant to be able to do to an invisible person!”

At the very least, none of the Draconians ridiculed her. They seemed to uphold a culture of kindness and understanding above all else, so being out and about in the city wasn’t as unpleasant as she’d imagined. The pretty colors—and, though she was somewhat loathe to admit it to herself, pretty people—made for great sightseeing as she strolled from stall to stall.
It was almost enough to make her understand why the more outgoing types like Jackie actually enjoyed going out like this. Almost.
She missed them. All of them, really. After spending so much time alone—and four hundred straight years in hibernation—she’d gotten used to the pleasant, if at times overbearing, company of Jackie and the others. She was enjoying spending time with Helena and Raffica, both of whom she considered especially close friends, but she longed to be reunited with the full group before too much longer.
Feeling heat on her cheeks, she shook her head. She could think about sappy stuff like that later, in private.

He said so, awaiting her approach. Kirra’s construct remained still, like a statue rooted in place. After a long, dreadfully empty moment, Lupus tilted his head.
Lupus: “You do not attack?”
Kirra: “Correct. As I said before, I do not wish to fight you—and to begin with, our goal is to escape the city, not to harm you or anyone else. If we are to fight, it will be because you attempt to strike me first.”
Lupus closed his clawed hands into fists. “Truly, your every act is vexing.”

She forcefully pried her gaze away. Against Madris and Cecil, and again with the Chimera, he’d more than proven himself capable, especially now that he’d obtained that Recess ability of his. She needed to trust in him and focus on her own fight.
When she faced forward, the green wolf was already right in front of her.
She let out a startled squeal and swung her claymore. The beast twisted around the arc of her blade, rushing right past her to go after Allydrah instead. The Druid darted sideways but was still clipped by the passing wolf’s body.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows:

Jackie moved to the edge of the pavement and waved for Sam to follow. They both sat as Tokala positioned himself between the three dummies. He sank into a combat stance, taking a deep breath.
Then he was a blur of motion.
Cracks and snaps and clangs rang out in rapid succession as Tokala unleashed a flurry of blows onto the central dummy. Swift punches, kicks, and chops had it rocking despite its sturdy post, its bucket helmet clattering about. His barrage of attacks was fluid, constant, each move leading perfectly into the next. He jumped between the three dummies, landing hits on each, weaving back and forth with the footwork of an elegant dancer.
The more they watched, the more they noticed, and the more impressed they became. Tokala’s moves maintained a consistent pace, but their variety increased as he continued, gradually mixing knee and elbow strikes into the mix. They saw how his tail swished about, balancing him as he flicked from foe to foe. What impressed them most of all was his stance—even as he unleashed such rapid attacks, he maintained his guard at all times. It was though he was treating the dummies as actual enemies, denying them any opening through which to strike him. With how hard he was hitting them, they wouldn’t be surprised if one of them did stand up to try and take its revenge.

She gently pulled the cloth down and opened her right eye. Then she opened it again. Blinked a few times. Opened one more time. Her vision was just as shrunken as before. She slowly moved a finger to press against her eyelid, but… she couldn’t find it. She searched blindly for it, but it wasn’t there. It was gone.
Her eye… was gone.

They nodded grimly. “And Orrian?” He hadn’t been present at the end.
Sils: “Dead. Raffica finished him off.”
They sucked in a hiss of a breath. Killing had made Raffica physically ill before; now they’d forced her to do it again. Another monumental failure on their part.
At least that repugnant man was gone. They hoped he’d met a fitting end; scum like him, who dared to hurt and insult the most important people in the world, deserved everything that came to them.
…no, they couldn’t keep thinking like that. They would proclaim proudly that their friends were the greatest people alive, but that didn’t make other people any less valuable. They didn’t expect others to always agree with their friends, either. There was no logic in damning the world simply because it didn’t fit into the carefully constructed box of ‘Jackie’s Friends’.
They were just lashing out, exactly like Orrian had—ironic, to find they shared the very trait that caused them to despise him. That their outburst came merely as thoughts rather than words made no difference. They were a twisted, violent person. They were a cold, calculating killer who trampled over their friends’ desires.
They… weren’t a good person, were they?

She roared in response, lunging once more. Helena stepped in front of Sam, Lii a wooden handle in her arms. She swung, and the girl became a huge mallet just in time to crack against Cecil’s jaw.
Sam: “Please, stop this! This isn’t worth dying over, is it!?”
Cecil snapped her head back into place, causing Helena to stumble. Lii quickly became a tall tower shield just before a paw sent Helena careening into the nearby ridge.
Sam: “We don’t have to hurt you! If you stand down, we can stop this!”
Strade grabbed Sam by the hood and yanked him away as Cecil pounced, two paws tearing gashes into the dirt. He fled towards what remained of the wall of root stalks, slipping between two of them; they barely slowed Cecil as she ripped them to shreds.

Of the four Humans, he reasoned he was probably the most skilled in melee combat. That meant little. Jackie was a skilled strategist, and had their perception to rely on as well. Sam was skilled as both an archer and a doctor, roles that others could not fill. Helena was taller, stronger than he, and in this battle she was fighting alongside Lii in a way he never could.
Of all the people on this battlefield, Strade was the weakest. The one with the least value. Dead weight. Chains that weighed down the mission, that bit into his friends’ skin.
If he couldn’t rely on strength or strategy, he should just resort to sacrifice.
They’d be better off without him, anyways.
He shook those thoughts away as he rose on shaky limbs, spitting to the side. Up ahead, Helena and Lii had already engaged Madris again. He needed to support them.

They’d caught her eyes flicking back and forth, no doubt scanning for her allies. This would be as good a spot as any to stage an ambush. Jackie was almost certain this was where the Black Star was staging its operations.
Here was the decisive moment. Were the Black Star truly trying to help them, or was this all just a setup to kill or capture them? If it was the former, would they simply allow the group to pass? Was their true goal just to keep them from reaching Saga?
Sam: “I just don’t want to end up hurting someone who was innocent.”
His words echoing in their head, they put on a smile. “Well, let’s keep going, then.”

In the beginning, there was nothing. But that ‘nothing’ was made out of ‘something’—the Leys, the force which comprise all of existence. They are the ultimate source of all magic, and they are what everything in this world is built out of. They are everything that is, was, could be, will be, and isn’t.
A world consisting of ‘nothing’ would be dull, so the Leys created the first things to exist—the Gods. Being the first and only things in the universe, they were arrogant, and naturally, the Gods spent an indeterminate amount of time simply killing each other in the void.
It is said that one alliance of Gods, seeking to preserve itself, suggested to the others that they forge a ceasefire in order to create, instead. To their surprise, the others agreed, and so together they built the Earth and eventually began to populate it with life.
The Gods were quite clever, and they attempted to understand and categorize the nature of the Leys just as we mortals have. They divided the infinite spectrum into three distinct facets—Matter, Mind, and Magic—and determined that they were created through a perfect unity of those facets in equal amount. Their experiments led them to create intelligent life forged of just two equal facets—Mortals of Mind and Matter, Fae of Mind and Magic, and Monsters of Magic and Matter.

The correct decision was obvious. Lyrric was a strong, competent combatant, more than capable of holding his own; both of them would be better off facing a few enemies alone than letting themselves be overwhelmed by the full, united force of the pirates.
Plus, Locke already had the attention of the Ghost. Her powers would prove a perfect counter to Lyrric’s; creating a situation where he was forced to fight her would likely just result in him being defeated immediately.
Furthermore, Lyrric had another card available to him—Kirra. Only they knew where she was hidden; if his opponents managed to defeat him, he could use that information to guarantee his life, at least temporarily.
So, all things considered, Locke turned to sprint away after 1.22 seconds of deliberation.

Even after she did join the fray, she’d played it safe. She didn’t take risks, and because of that, Raffica had gotten badly hurt. Lii could shrug off cuts like that; if someone had to get hurt, it should have been her. Instead, her cowardice had forced her new friend to suffer that pain.
Raffica was a good person. She was so kind and outgoing, like a bright star masquerading as a girl. Even knowing what Lii was, she’d reached out and eagerly accepted her as a friend. Knowing she’d hurt such a wonderful, perfect person through her inaction, it made her want to smash her head against the wall.
Why? Why hadn’t she acted? Why hadn’t she done more? Why did she keep letting her friends get hurt?
Because she was still terrified of herself.

Beihart had made a habit of sizing up his opponents before any fight. He had a talent for it, though Lieutenant Marjoriee often scolded him for getting so absorbed in those thoughts. It was one of the few points on which he vehemently disagreed with his superior officer. True, he might get too caught up in his analysis at times, but it usually granted him very useful insights.
Take his current opponent, for example. The Zombie was standing even after taking a blast of his blunderbuss. That alone was impressive, but he’d also managed to block the follow-up attack. He was strong, hardy, and had a quick reaction time to boot.
Furthermore, his weapons told the tale of a wise and experienced warrior, one who understood his racial magic well. A two-handed primary weapon and two lighter, one-handed weapons as backups; he’d seen other Zombies employ similar arsenals to make the most of their regeneration and Autotonomy. That he carried those weapons also implied he had the skill and experience necessary to fight in multiple styles—with his odachi, with his dual swords, and potentially even with just one.
Altogether, Beihart was convinced that the man standing before him was a formidable adversary. He judged that the Zombie likely matched him in combat skill, or was perhaps even his superior. However—

The events that played out in Avek Tirion had been a wake-up call for Strade, in multiple ways. First, it had truly alerted him to how dangerous this mission was. They’d been assaulted by enemies he couldn’t possibly stand against—and those hulking titans of armor had numbered in the dozens. Second, it had shown him the reality of what ‘war’ was. He had heard that Jackie and Sam fought against a couple soldiers from Evendel, but he hadn’t truly understood the gravity of fighting against other, real people until he was involved in it himself.
‘Involved’ wasn’t the right word. He hadn’t done a damn thing.
Third, and perhaps most importantly, that battle had revealed to him just how weak he was. He couldn’t hold a candle to those Volundr mechs, or to Admiral Kyte, or even to the more normal-seeming members of his team like Jahd and Raffica. He was just Human, born without any racial magic he could utilize in battle; he would always be at a disadvantage.

It still felt surreal to her. Evendel had enjoyed an era of peace under King Elliana’s reign, even beginning to nurture friendly relations with the people of Avek Tirion. Then they bombed Raes unprovoked; it was perhaps the single worst tragedy to befall her nation in her entire lifetime, and it was an affront Evendel would not soon forgive.
It would have been natural for the king himself to lead the charge; if not him, the high general, or either of the other generals. It was a conflict of great import, after all.
Instead, the task was handed down to her—a mere lieutenant in charge of conquering another nation. It baffled her as much as the rest of the nation.

Jackie was no stranger to death, or to the act of killing. The Heap made for an unforgiving home—edible plants were few in number, and the majority of its inhabitants were intelligent hunters. Some were more beastly in nature, such as the Kuzumade, but most had similar levels of intelligence to Humans—not to mention similar body plans.
Where was the line between a 'person’ and a ‘monster’? Recent events had convinced Jackie that there wasn’t really a line at all. Lii was a monster—a Mimic—but she was clearly also a person. They would have previously considered Kritta monsters, but now they knew that civilized Kritta lived outside of the Heap. In the right circumstances, could even something like a Kumori be a civilized person?
Such ponderings weren’t of importance at the moment. What was important was that Jackie had, by necessity, killed throughout their entire life, and that included killing things that could be argued to be people. That was simply the normal way of life for them. Things hadn’t seemed much different in the outside world, either; they had larger groups of people and fewer intelligent monsters, and they used terms like ‘war’, but it seemed that this world, too, was built on a foundation of violence and killing.

It was too late to change course and evade. The sword’s arc was too low to duck beneath, too high to leap above. With no other option, Jahd faced the oncoming blade and held his own in front of him, placing one hand on the flat as he braced for impact.
Against a foe several times his size, one wielding a sword several times the size of his own, he prepared to block the attack. Metal met metal, sparks screeching between the blades. The smaller warrior stood firm, bearing the brunt of the colossus’s strike with ease—naturally, such a thing did not occur, but Jahd accomplished what he set out to. Instead of being cleft in twain, his body was merely sent careening backwards, flipping through the air like a ragdoll.

That its strategy had been overcome was unexpected, but it did not matter. No, it should not matter. With the power granted by the master, it should be able to kill each of these creatures with ease; instead, they were gaining the upper hand. They had wounded it, even though they were weaker. It was inconceivable. How were they overwhelming it when it alone had been blessed by the master?
This was just like before. Things that were weaker than it had banded together, gained the upper hand, and wounded it. Therefore, just like before, the correct thing to do would be to flee. If it escaped, it could regenerate, gather new forces, and invent new stratagems. It could discover how the living kept overwhelming it and prevent that from ever happening again. It could fulfill the purpose the master had granted it.

Even so, she didn’t have much of a choice in the matter. She couldn’t exactly disobey Lieutenant Marjoriee, and her role in this stratagem was an essential one. Someone had to be there to wrangle the Firefly, lest it fly off in some random direction or suddenly decide it felt less tame than the day before and eat one of the soldiers it was meant to serve.
That someone ended up being Annelys. She should have foreseen this and specialized in taming monsters that were less useful, but that opportunity was long past.
While that stood at the top of her grand list of ‘Things Annelys Ought To Have Done’, right below it on the list was ‘not miss that Harpy’. She’d thought for sure she’d lined up a perfect shot, but the bullet had merely hit the pirate’s wing. To make matters worse, that hadn’t even been enough to completely prevent the Harpy from flying, and she and her companion had flown off to hide in some other tree.

Sils: “I never asked to be in charge, damn it!”
Jahd: “You are in charge. I’ll save her, but you need to stay. They,” he gestured broadly at everyone else, “need order, especially if there’s an attack while we’re gone.”
As captain and first mate glared at each other, the others around the room exchanged nervous glances. Just as Sils seemed ready to sling another retort, she was cut off by the clap of someone slamming their hands down on the table. All eyes turned to the source—a young, red-haired girl.
