Once upon a time, the idea of removing the comedy from Good Omens because it deprived the story of profundity was the crowning glory of an exercise in absurdity.
August 2001
Neil Gaiman posts to his website the response Gilliam gave when asked how the project was going. Gilliam said, “I’ll warn you in advance that we created a very different climax. And we dropped favorite characters. We added some scenes involving cattle drives in the Old West and song and dance sequences from our favorite Bollywood films. We also tried to make the Metatron more Jewish for the sake of the financiers. Woody Allen would be perfect…or maybe Mel Brooks. Then there is the snuff movie that Crowley is producing which we get to see in utterly graphic detail…we thought it would make him more active in believable evil. And we eliminated most of the comedy. I felt it held the book back from being the ‘great and profound work’, which we hope the film will be.”

On the TPE ending 🧵: Sacrifice doesn't belong in a story where Adam explicitly averts it, keeps his powers, and both human and non-human beings get on with their lives exactly as themselves - especially having to sacrifice part of yourself to be with the person you love.
On the "mortal ending" envisioned by the Terry Pratchett Estate
Rob Wilkins revealed the ending envisioned by the TPE at a Q&A panel at the Ineffable Convention.

It paints an evocative domestic atmosphere at the South Downs cottage where Aziraphale and Crowley get to live after giving up their divinity and being granted a human lifetime during which they will grow old together and die.

I have already discussed why I find turning them mortal at odds with the novel and the notion that non-human sentient beings can co-exist with humans without changing their nature here.

Adam kept his powers and showed that there's a place for Aziraphale and Crowley in the world they helped save as themselves. If there is a point to be made about humanity, it's that humanity is inclusive and we see it in Aziraphale's and Crowley's curiosity and fascination with humans, their love for the world and its pleasures, their affection for each other, their selfishness and selflessness.

The justification for stripping them of their divinity makes matters worse, as they give it up to be together. They don't "get the eternity they want", they sacrifice a fundamental part of themselves for a fleeting moment with the person they love.Whether it's the price all angels and demons have to pay to save the world (hopefully willingly), or the condition granting a celestial/infernal being freedom from their employer, we still end up in a situation where it's someone's nature (instead of their job) preventing them from finding their place in the world.

And it's a hefty price to pay: turning an immortal being into a mortal one - and vice versa - forces them into a life and mental state they weren't made for. Not to mention the loss of divine powers for beings who haven't quite figured out how the world works and rely on imagination and minor miracles to get by.

I can't find any solace in such an ending despite the debacle of the finale. Aziraphale and Crowley sacrificing part of themselves to be free to love each other openly for a blink of an eye, facing the toils of the human condition and then one of them probably dying alone after all their struggles and growth is not how I would expect or wish a story where self-sacrifice is explicitly averted to end.

I will try to cling to the novel ending and their toast at the end of S1 and think fondly of the only glimpse Terry Pratchett gave us of their future - them tucked in bed with the context left as an exercise to the reader.

For me, Aziraphale and Crowley will remain ineffable. Forever.

I wonder how often Aziraphale pops in for a cup of tea with the Librarian. Or to borrow a scroll from the Library of Alexandria thought lost in the fire.
Excerpt from Good Omens:

AZIRAPHALE COLLECTED BOOKS. If he were totally honest with himself he would have to have admitted that his bookshop was simply somewhere to store them. He was not unusual in this. In order to maintain his cover as a typical second-hand bookseller, he used every means short of actual physical violence to prevent customers from making a purchase. Unpleasant damp smells, glowering looks, erratic opening hours—he was incredibly good at it.Excerpt from Guards! Guards!:

Books bend space and time. One reason the owners of those aforesaid little rambling, poky secondhand bookshops always seem slightly unearthly is that many of them really are, having strayed into this world after taking a wrong turning in their own bookshops in worlds where it is considered commendable business practice to wear carpet slippers all the time and open your shop only when you feel like it. You stray into L-space at your peril.

My favourite scenes: In the beginning, both looking towards the humans from their vantage point on the wall, and Crowley slightly leaning towards Aziraphale. In the end, both among the humans but looking at each other and Aziraphale reaching out. And a white wing always protecting Crowley.
Aziraphale and Crowley standing on the wall of Eden watching the humans. Aziraphale has raised his wing over Crowley to protect him from the first rain.Aziraphale and Crowley at the Ritz after foiling Armageddon. The piano lid in the distance is a stand-in for a wing over Crowley.

On the basic aspects of the #GoodOmens finale ending 🧵: Part of my response to a post analysing how they relate to TP's philosophy. I argue that every point already had a satisfying resolution in the context of the book (maybe that's why a sequel was never written).

mythenoë @mythenoe.bsky.social · 21/06/2026
On the human ending 🧵: Adam chose a human life but kept his powers. A&C briefly wonder whether it's allowed and then we are explicitly shown it is. And as this post points out, non-human beings don't have to conform to a specific biological or cultural paradigm to belong.
A Tumblr post from user possibility-left:

PTerry and "humanism"
Terry Pratchett is very pro humanity but I feel like people may be putting more emphasis on that than is reasonable. He's also very pro troll, and pro dwarf, and eventually pretty much any kind of intelligent creature, including goblins, who put a lot of cultural significance into snot. Pratchett's non humans are not forced to become human to belong, and many retain their own languages and culture and ways of life, while others are free to find their own ways even if their people don't like it (see Cherry for example, the first openly female presenting dwarf in Ankh-Morpork).

If Crowley and Aziraphale showed up on the Discworld, they'd be welcomed as they were right up until Crowley started a massive traffic jam and then he'd find out why you shouldn't make Commander Vimes mad. But Vimes wouldn't yell at him for being a demon - he'd yell at him for being a little shit.

Just another little thought about themes and GO3.

Regarding Crowley's last wish for a world devoid of the fantastical, here's a thought from the person Crowley and the authors dedicated the story to, a man who knew what was going on and the only poet in the twentieth century to even come close to the Truth: #GO3spoilers #GoodOmens3
A quote from Chesterton's Orthodoxy:

“The ordinary man has always been sane because the ordinary man has always been a mystic. He has permitted the twilight. He has always had one foot in earth and the other in fairyland. He has always left himself free to doubt his gods; but (unlike the agnostic of to-day) free also to believe in them. He has always cared more for truth than for consistency. If he saw two truths that seemed to contradict each other, he would take the two truths and the contradiction along with them. His spiritual sight is stereoscopic, like his physical sight: he sees two different pictures at once and yet sees all the better for that. Thus he has always believed that there was such a thing as fate, but such a thing as free will also. Thus he believed that children were indeed the kingdom of heaven, but nevertheless ought to be obedient to the kingdom of earth. He admired youth because it was young and age because it was not. It is exactly this balance of apparent contradictions that has been the whole buoyancy of the healthy man.”

Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together). It captures their separation by circumstances, longing, unbreakable bond, misunderstanding, hope and ultimate reunion in eternity perfectly - in lyrics, composition, and delivery. #GO3 www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge18...
The lyrics to Queen's Teo Torriatte:

When I'm gone
No need to wonder if I ever think of you
The same moon shines
The same wind blows
For both of us, and time is but a paper moon
Be not gone
Though I'm gone
It's just as though I hold the flower that touches you
A new life grows
The blossom knows
There's no one else could warm my heart as much as you
Be not gone

Let us cling together as the years go by
Oh my love, my love
In the quiet of the night
Let our candle always burn
Let us never lose the lessons we have learned
手を取り合って このままでいこう 愛する人よ
静かな宵に 光を灯し 愛しき教えを抱き

Hear my song
Still think of me the way you've come to think of me
The nights grow long
But dreams live on
Just close your pretty eyes, and you can be with me
Dream on
手を取り合って このままでいこう 愛する人よ
静かな宵に 光を灯し 愛しき教えを抱き
When I'm gone
They'll say we're all fools, and we don't understand
Oh, be strong
Don't turn your heart
We're all
You're all
For all
For always

Let us cling together as the years go by
Oh my love, my love
In the quiet of the night
Let our candle always burn
Let us never lose the lessons we have learned

In particular, the garbled words of lorem ipsum bear an unmistakable resemblance to sections 1.10.32–33 of Cicero’s work, with the most notable passage excerpted below:

“Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit, sed quia non numquam eius modi tempora incidunt ut labore et dolore magnam aliquam quaerat voluptatem.”

A 1914 English translation by Harris Rackham reads:
