Ever wondered which words you only know because of Magic: The Gathering? "Merfolk" appears 8.4 million times more often in Magic card titles than in everyday English! "Samite", "archfiend" and "invoker" are equally MTG-specific vocab!
Dumbbell chart titled "Words You Only Know Because of Magic: The Gathering." Thirty rows list words from Magic card titles, ordered from least to most common in Magic (bottom to top). Each row has two dots connected by a horizontal line: a grey dot marking how often the word appears in everyday English, and a blue dot marking how often it appears in Magic card titles. Because all 30 words are vastly more common in Magic than in English, the grey dots cluster tightly near the left edge while the blue dots sit far to the right, creating a wide gap on every row. A multiplier label beside each blue dot quantifies the difference — values range from around 3 million times more common (words like "disputant" and "chainer") up to 8.5 million times more common ("samite" and "merfolk"). Words shown include merfolk, invoker, archfiend, pyromancer, samite, boggart, outrider, bloodletter, and others that are rarely or never encountered outside the game.
