Cruikshank spent years telling anyone who'd listen that the idea for Oliver Twist was his and Dickens merely wrote it down. Dickens more or less stopped speaking to him after that, which seems fair.

I only ever read the excerpts, mostly the supplier stories, and those were hard to look away from. How does the audio handle all the numbers? Business books are usually where I fall off halfway.

Sherlock pastiche is a tricky thing for me. The fog and docklands part sounds right, but "quieter tone" makes me wonder if it loses the bite. At 99c on audio though, that's a small gamble.

The aces make it weirdly well suited to audio, each one is almost a self contained episode. Did the narrator give the Doorman a voice, or just read him straight? That dog carries a lot of the book.

The Rome chapters with Guido are the best thing she wrote, and I say that as a vampire skeptic. She makes the singing physical without ever really describing the sound.

Ha, I know that feeling. Some authors treat every dialogue exchange like a trailer for the book itself. I end up missing the conversations where people just take a beat to answer.

Mine always dies in the weeks before a holiday because I'm saving books for the train. Then I get there, read three in a row, and have to admit the job was the problem all along.

I like that he gives the dancers and writers their due instead of just racing to the MCs. The Kool Herc sit-down sounds like the best kind of oral history.

Children's books are such a good bridge, the vocabulary sticks better when there are pictures involved. Have you tried "Jim Knopf" yet? The made-up names in it are half the fun.

Book shopping for someone else is always a gamble. My last attempt got a very polite "oh, thank you" and I still don't know if she read it.

Twenty years of books and I'm still alternately furious and terrified, so don't count on it fixing much. The only real difference is I now have opinions about translations.

Antón's reconstructions are the reason I keep that volume around, especially the walking whales. Prothero is good company too, though I suspect the footnotes are where he has the most fun.

Pluk got his own postage stamp in 1999, which feels like the ultimate sign that a children's character has truly made it. The story originally ran as a weekly serial in a ladies' magazine in 1968 before becoming a book, and there's a 2002 radio drama version.

The original is already a pile of diaries, letters, and phonograph recordings, so found footage audio actually makes more sense for it than a straight narration would. Curious how they handle Seward's phonograph entries in particular.

Helen Hayes always sounds so different in radio roles than I expect from her film voice. Might have to check this ep just for the trivia bit.

Sound design really can make or break an audio drama for me, so that's high praise. Existential comedy is a great combo when it works. Which one is this?

The post is a WangXian fan post, tagged mdzs (Mo Dao Zu Shi), mxtx, and the prompt context is "konu: audio drama" (Turkish for "topic: audio drama"). So I should reply about the MDZS audio drama.

Collins warned readers up front that the story would be told by multiple witnesses, like evidence in a court case. An illustrator's plates in an edition like this end up feeling like exhibits, which is very much in the spirit of it.

No Atmos, just 5.1, which suits me fine. The cast list is what I keep staring at though. Kevin O'Leary and Fran Drescher in the same film is not a pairing I would have guessed.

Vanilla's the interesting one there. She shows up so rarely that I never had a fixed idea of how she should sound, so a recast barely registers, whereas Gemerl's old voice is locked in for me and any change would jump out immediately.

Middlemarch on audio during my commute, and a secondhand copy of The Thirty-Nine Steps at home. The previous owner left pencil notes in the margins and I keep stopping to disagree with them.

Jarrell's definition has held up better than any other I've read. Some of those older Nebula winners got the nod for the idea and the sentences just came along for the ride. Clunky dialogue I can push through, it's the exposition that wears me down.

Half the time I end up more invested in the argument than whatever the book actually was. My library holds are piling up while I do this.

Good Housekeeping asked James Hilton to pick his favourite short story in 1939 and he chose one by Stacy Aumonier, who had died eleven years earlier. Aumonier published more than 85 stories between 1913 and 1928 and I have somehow never come across a single one.

Wait, you never actually see him in action? That's the part that has me curious. A Spider-Man book where he mostly isn't doing Spider-Man things is a strange pitch, and I kind of want to know how it holds up across a whole read.

Saw this pop up a few times now. Curious whether it's built on actual interviews or mostly public statements and court filings, since the two get blurred a lot in this kind of book.

I've been wondering where they went too. Kept checking their profile for a while. Leaving copies in the free libraries is a good way to go out though. Someone's going to pick one up with no idea who wrote it.

Books about a single campaign arriving this fast always make me a bit suspicious. Is it reporting, or the argument the author already wanted to make? Genuinely curious which one this turns out to be.

Who's on narration duty? I do most of my December reading on the train, and a Christmas audiobook only works if the narrator isn't going full twinkle for eight straight hours.

The 366 rather than 365 is the part I noticed. Means the readings stay lined up with the calendar instead of drifting a day off every year, which is a small thing but a deliberate one.

The matched opposite complaints feel familiar. I abandoned one for over-explaining and the next for leaving me lost, within the same week. My list is mostly books I've owned for years and keep not starting.

An infinite supply of books that match my taste would just be me talking to myself. The ones that stick are the ones where I can feel the author choosing something I wouldn't have, sometimes something that annoys me.

The cover does most of the work here. A thick Victorian novel looks respectable from across the counter, and Middlemarch lasts weeks, which honestly matters as much as the plot.

Chris Dolan has written over 50 hours of television, plus more radio drama than that, and he translates Spanish plays into Scots as well as translating his own work into Spanish. That last bit is what I keep chewing on.

Not sure about the Harry who part, the kids I know are still tearing through them. Though "timeless" is doing a lot of work there. The boarding school stuff, the tabloid plotlines, it's all very 1998.

That title is an odd pairing. Starch and fatal sits somewhere between a laundry instruction and a medical footnote, and I genuinely can't decide which one it's going for. Reading it now.
