I mask up in public and it's usually notable when I see others doing the same. Masking isn't comfortable but I rarely get sick anymore and it's been very nice. Vaccines rock, too!

Lol I would be lying if I said I didn't contemplate doing it myself

Yeah I've been doing my share of AI features at work and I always make it a point to have the underlying manual workflow polished and clean before moving on to the AI part. If nothing else, who's to say anyone will even want these AI features in 6 months or a year? Gotta have a good foundation first

But what if you want Linux without all that woke that Linux famously has!? (Or whatever the pitch is)

Lol yeah. I mostly just like playing around with virtual machines and the like. Cities Skylines is intense with those mods though!

I regret not totally maximizing the ram in my framework 16. I got 64GB as it was a happy medium. I naively figured it'd be cheaper later on. Little did I know the AI bubble was still to come!

So many times I see Omarchy recommended and it's like... I'm not even going to touch it. I'm not even that familiar with what it supposedly does well because it just doesn't matter to me. I try to spread the word about DHH being awful whenever someone mentions it to me.

Oh my. Every time I read his blog posts I very much regret it. He somehow finds a way to one up himself every time

Oh nice I didn't know he had a new book. Haven't encountered one yet I didn't like!

I made the mistake of watching it on a plane. Terrible video and terrible audio but I still enjoyed it!

Not to say that my way is best! I totally get the point I'm your article and definitely see the logic to it

Yeah it does certainly take a while. I do have a tendency to be a bit precious about my code though so I think I tend to want to think it through very carefully before letting the ai go at it. My thought is that it's easier to fix the plan than to realize later that it's working on bad assumptions.

Mylan @mylan.io · 07/07/2026
Usually I go with the big plan route but I'll iterate on the plan a while before coding starts. I personally experience a lot of inconsistent ui, inconsistent behavior, and duplicated functionalities without it. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with my method, probably.

I remember thinking it was a pretty good movie but then I hardly ever see anyone talking about it lol. Cool to see it brought up!

I think all schemas that relate with each other would need to be changed to ash resources at the same time since ash probably validated that the resources it relates to are indeed ash resources. I'm sure Claude could do a good job at it though
020
Mylan @mylan.io · 07/06/2026
I haven't tried this but theoretically it might be possible to just rewrite the schemas as ash resources since ash resources have underlying ecto schemas then convert the ecto changeset functions to ash actions? I've used ash resources with ecto directly before and it worked okay.

I think so! Between the conventions, usage rules, and tidewave, I've had super good luck with things. Testing can be a bit of a rough edge for Claude to figure out (they can be disjointed and there's real gaps sometimes) but I'm sure I can figure it out somehow.

Ash really is a super power for small teams or solo devs. A lot of stuff that I can get done quickly in Ash I can't really imagine doing otherwise in nearly the same amount of time

Yeah the Netflix appliances are pretty cool. Not sure why you got so much pushback on this. I did watch a lot of talks about them (mostly because I was interested in the FreeBSD parts)

I kept wondering when the AI folks will start raising the prices. Since they're driving up the prices of everything else computer related I figured it was matter of time

Yeah the extra ram can be helpful (serving more files from cache, etc) but it isn't required. I think a lot of info online conflates the two. ZFS is awesome and I use it as much as possible!

We have some servers around that generation at work (though not that exact one) and there is a possibility of power plans. Usually performance and efficiency modes are available. I heard efficiency mode (or whatever name it is) should reduce idle power draw, though I'm not sure by how much

I didn't know about that. The hexdocs links in particular always get me with the old versions. Thanks!

No problem! I'm sure my experience with Typst made me read it a certain way, too. Its mostly used for generating letters that go in the mail for us. We have images that can be uploaded and put into the letter (like logos and such)

Hey Jaime, I'm glad you're liking it! I think you want to use based: `#import "@preview/based:0.2.0": base64` and then I think I did something like `#let raw-image = base64.decode(base64-image-string)` and then `#image.decode(raw-image, format: "png")` (or the image format it is). Hope this helps!

Typst is wildly fast! It's one of my favorite technologies at the moment because of how tricky and slow using HTML to PDF has been in the past

Yeah it's here: hex.pm/packages/typ... I've used it pretty extensively so far and it works great for my use case but there might still be some rough edges or missing functionality. I need to push a new release that will update Typst itself to 0.14

Nice! I only had minor ergonomic preferences, the other two Typst libraries looked fine at the time. I think what I preferred was passing the variables into Typst rather than using EEx interpolation since I didn't want to teach end users EEx and Typst (hopefully I'm not misremembering lol)

Mylan @mylan.io · 24/12/2025
Typst is the only way I'd generate PDFs programmatically now as well. Chromic was very unreliable for me (but every other Chrome library was too so I don't blame them, I blame Chrome). I learned about Typst at Goatmire and when I got home I made my own Typst library and havent looked back (typster)

I just checked this morning and it works. I was hoping it would stack on the savings they have now but apparently not.

Mylan @mylan.io · 07/12/2025
Yeah that sounds like it could be a good stack. I'll have to check it out!

Mylan @mylan.io · 07/12/2025
Yeah I liked the idea of it but by the time I got around to giving it a shot it looked like it was stagnated and people moved on. It's cool that it works with React, I'll have to check it out. Especially when ash_typescript exists... 🤔

This sounds like a fun thing to look into! I didnt know about it. I've always liked the idea of Elm but it seemed like kind of a dead end to me... This is interesting!

I've followed the same basic path too. So far I'm happy enough with apple music. I do wish there was a Linux app too but I know there's about 0% chance of that happening
