Eastern North America! Wanna learn more about your local bumblebees? Here's an intro to identifying our three most common species. Also, for all my fellow @inaturalist.bsky.social City Nature Challenge identifiers, this is a quick starting point for IDing all your local bee observations this week!
Common Bumblebees of Eastern North America
From guides by Joel Neylon, Sheila Colla, Leif Richardson, and Paul Williams

Bombus impatiens
Key ID features -
Big blurry dot in the center of their back, made of a mix of black and yellow hair. Tends to have pale wings except for queens, which tend to have dark wings. Sometimes has some yellow hair on their head.

Bombus bimaculatus
Classic mark is two yellow spots on their abdomen, almost like two little yellow buttcheeks. Wings tend to be dark, almost always have a yellow patch on their head, and has a clear black dot between their wings. Additionally, their hair tends to be longer and messier

Bombus griseocollis
The classic mark is a stripe of brown hair on their abdomen. The dot on their back is small and neat, and their overall hair is neat and buzz-cut precise. Head only rarely has any yellow hair

Made a zine tonight about how to help feed people with food insecurity , and my art was terrible, but fortunately the event was Bad Art For Good so it kept with the theme. I like my little zine! Might make it look nicer and actually pass some out

Let’s check in and see how those rascally solarpunk kids are doing, surely they’ve learned by now that….. …ah. Daily reminder: Leafy greens like kales retain all those delicious heavy metals like lead and cadmium. Don’t eat sidewalk-crack kale.
A Reddit post of a well-meaning but unfortunately misguided person teaching people how to grow kale in sidewalk cracks and tree wells

New paper on AM fungi in a prairie restoration experiment planted with community members back in 2021! Beyond the cool results we found, this was such a fun day where so many of my labmates and volunteers supported my first field experiment as a grad student. Feeling so grateful! ☺️

In my experience: Nobody asks about your qualifications for the COVID vaccine CVS & Walgreens have a "Do you have a condition that puts you at high risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19 virus? Yes/No" button when signing up for a vax. In person when getting the shot, it wasn't even mentioned.
Screenshot from the cvs website "Do you have a condition that puts you at high risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19 virus?" with two answers: "Yes" or "No"

You’re never alone in the field! Caught some folks by surprise today: a couple swallowtails and an extremely annoyed cicada. Love to see our prairie plots being used as habitat 💚

Things you could do: -NSJP has called for a day of action 3/11; hold a rally or protest. -send senior faculty to meet with admin and demand guarantees they won’t coordinate with ICE or admin -have all campus unions demand admin non-cooperation or compliance with Trump agenda

It sure would be nice to see more effort focussed on resistance rather than compliance from our leaders. Calling on those in a position of power to show some courage.

Make them tell you, specifically, what you're not allowed to do. Don't make changes you guess that they want. Don't offer them a menu of things that you infer they might be telling you not to do. Do the work you proposed, and received funding to do, unless instructed otherwise in specific detail.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
