The new Resident Evil movie has no characters from the games and the nature of the monstrosity is completely different but it does nail the problem-solving "oh god what now?" feeling of the games. Basically a horror version of After Hours.

Black text on white background
"This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss.

The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes.

Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment.

To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity."

It's definitely in the U.S., upon further inspection. Somebody talks about the law "in this state". But the American character is significantly othered that I'm reading everyone else as English unless otherwise stated.

Yeah the movie is a very loose adaptation but it does seem to be mostly derived from the original text, albeit restructured as a whodunnit.

"Fifty plus pages"? That does sound expanded. It's only 23 pages in Thrilling Wonder Stories. Although I guess Haining might be using a larger typeset.

Yes, it sounds like we both read the same version, if you don't remember there being anything about witches. Thanks for your help on this!

That would be my guess as well. Do you remember if you read it in an anthology?
100
Mr. MORBIDson🍁 @mutantmuseum.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Yes, that occurred to me as a definite possibility. In the version you read, do you remember a reveal that the character Doris was a witch? She isn't, in the pulp version.

Mr. MORBIDson🍁 @mutantmuseum.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Do you know if there are multiple versions of it? When I look it up online, I see references to characters and plot points that do not come up in the version I've read, as it was published in Thrilling Wonder Stories in 1950.

@hypnogoria.bsky.social Hi Jim, are you at all familiar with James Blish's horror novella THERE SHALL BE NO DARKNESS? I'm preparing on a piece on it for my own channel and I've run into a bit of a mystery, and I thought you might be the person to ask.

I am running from the paperback novel house.
A screengrab on my profile. My profile pic shows me in a running position (wearing my beloved jack-o'-lantern sweater) and the cover image above it is an old dark house at night with a single light on in the tower, taken from the cover of a paperback gothic novel called House of Dark Laughter.

One of those "Me on Sept. 30" vs. "Me on Oct. 1" memes.
In the first image (taken from a Bill the Blighted thumbnail) I look serious and am wearing a tweed suit. In the second I'm wearing vampire fangs and a jack-o'-lantern sweater, and Johnny Longbone from Track of the Moonbeast is extending from my mouth like an Alien's second set of jaws.

I do have to warn you that Basil Rathbone is the only one of them who gets much to do. Carradine has a few brief scenes in which he is memorably crazy but everyone else is basically an extra.

Mr. MORBIDson🍁 @mutantmuseum.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
No, he's probably the quietest and sanest man in the film. But John Carradine spends all his scenes psychotically screaming about the Crusades so that's fun.
000
Mr. MORBIDson🍁 @mutantmuseum.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
No, he's actually the hero and he has to exposes Basil Rathbone's evil experimental brain surgery practice. Though he does briefly go into a drug-induced supercoma to fake his death after being wrongly convicted of killing Tor Johnson.

The best thing to come out of this movie is probably this photo, which I guess was taken during rehearsals or something
Lon Chaney Jr., John Carradine, and Bela Lugosi, holding forks and knives and all pretending to eat the head of a terrified-looking Tor Johnson, whose body is covered with a tablecloth. Carradine is doing an almost hammer-and-chisel gesture, like he's trying to crack Tor's skull open.

Should I assume the story is set west of the Atlantic, then? Aside from a few characters explicitly referenced as continental Europeans (a Pole and a Scandinavian), everyone has Anglo-Saxon names. Are they British people in the USA? Is it Canada? What accents should I give them?
