It's just tiring to see "I almost got run down by a cyclist!" immediately devolve into "Cyclists must behave as if they were cars" without any particular introspection. Like, maybe follow this reasoning a little bit farther:
"If cars ran those lights at even one tenth the rate of cyclists, witnessing a pedestrian dying would be a weekly occurrence for me."

[highlighted] And finally, I critiqued the elite consensus because it desperately needed elite critics [end highlight], and lacking them it was constantly tempted into overreach. Even when it started out in a reasonable place it didn’t know when to stop, and there was too much about human nature that it didn’t seem to know.

the sum of my knowledge about republican tactics:
"And how will you advance on La Granja if that bridge is blown?"
"We go forward prepared to repair it after we have stormed the pass. It is a very complicated and beautiful operation. As complicated and as beautiful as always. The plan has been manufactured in Madrid. It is another of Vicente Rojo, the unsuccessful professor's, masterpieces. I make the attack and I make it, as always, not in sufficient force. It is a very possible operation, in spite of that. I am much happier about it than usual. It can be successful with that bridge eliminated. We can take Segovia. Look, I show you how it goes. You see? It is not the top of the pass where we attack. We hold that. It is much beyond. Look— Here— Like this-"

I guess I don’t care enough about this to find out what a “narrative of self-victimization” is, but it sounds exactly the kind of thing Pete Hegseth would be contemptuous of. Ah well.

If he wanted to send 2000 ships even as far as the Moon, he would have to launch at least 10000 ships, perfectly, to supply them with fuel. So that would be 13 flights per day, every day, for two years. Assuming no boil off in orbit. So I’m skeptical.
The first flight to Mars would carry a simulated crew consisting of one or more robots of the Tesla-built humanoid Optimus design, with the first human crews following in the second or third landings. Musk said he envisioned eventually launching 1,000 to 2,000 ships to Mars every two years to quickly establish a self-sustaining permanent human settlement.

I am kind of mad and jealous that an Icelandic news story is the clearest, most BS-free explanation of the impossibility of this setup.
He also said in the same interview that the Mammoth capture plant was not designed with energy efficiency in mind, but only how much CO2 it could capture. This means that for every 1,000 tons of CO2 captured, 5 to 6 million kilowatt-hours of energy would be required. To put Climeworks' energy needs in perspective, it would take up to 72 terawatts to fully offset Iceland's carbon footprint each year, with the country's total emissions of 12.4 million tons of CO2 in 2024. This is equivalent to almost four times Iceland's electricity production, which is about 20 terawatts per year.

there’s a chapter in there that I keep going back to just because I love the writing. it involves s death. I should connect it to this, from the article.
Adam Becker: Kurzweil tries to get around this by saying that you're not going to be immortal, but you can live as long as you want to. Sure, that gets around some of it. But Kurzweil also thinks that we're going to find a way around the second law of thermodynamics, which we re not. [highlighted by poster] I do think that fear of death is at the root of a lot of this, if not all of it.[end highlight] I don't know if I would go as far as to say that death is what gives life meaning. I would say that the human experience is defined by the limitations that death imposes, the fact that our time is limited. If you remove that constraint, that would fundamentally alter the human condition in ways that very well might not be pleasant.

The saying "even a big dog makes little pies" is a playful way of saying that everyone, regardless of their size or perceived abilities, can make mistakes or have weaknesses. It's a reminder that perfection is rare, and even the most competent individuals can stumble.

yeah but:
A new congressional trading form filed by Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene disclosed that she purchased positioned in companies across several sectors amid a recent sell-off in markets.
According to the form, the 50-year-old Congresswoman representing the 14th district in Georgia purchased stakes in cybersecurity CrowdStrike (NASDAQ:CRWD) on March 7 with the stake worth between $1,001 and $15,000.
She also purchased stakes in Dollar General (NYSE:DG), Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS), Impinj (PI), Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). The value of these stakes were also between $1,001 and $15,000 each.
Congresswoman Greene disclosed purchases of several tech stocks, including Palantir, last month. She also revealed purchases in December 2024 and January 2025, a week after President Trump's inauguration.

Just to be clear, an unelected person who has taken zero oaths to uphold the constitution, sits in cabinet meetings and insists that it would be better to have *empty chairs* in air traffic control centers than minorities.
Mr. Duffy said there were not any names, because he had stopped them from being fired. At another point, Mr. Musk insisted that people hired under diversity, equity and inclusion programs were working in control towers. Mr. Duffy pushed back and Mr. Musk did not add details, but said during the longer back and forth that Mr. Duffy had his phone number and should call him if he had any issues to raise.

can’t wish enough good things for this gentleman who is just totally gobsmacked that his *conservative* federal employee constituents are getting “demonized.”
The last two weeks, we've probably tripled our efforts just to communicate with the major federal employment offices in my district," he said. "I know I have a very unique district. It's a very strongly conservative district, but also a federal workforce district, and right now, those two are at odds because federal workers are kind of getting demonized out there in the social media sphere.

yeah great idea this. www.ncesc.com/why-do-air-t...
The primary reason behind the retirement age of 56 for air traffic controllers is the critical nature of their job. Air traffic control is a high-stress occupation that requires quick decision-making and extreme focus. As controllers age, their visual acuity, hearing, and cognitive abilities may naturally decline. These physiological changes can affect their ability to perform the complex tasks required to ensure the safety of air traffic. By setting a retirement age of 56, regulatory authorities aim to mitigate the potential risks associated with age-related decline in performance.

on Friday night I found this small girl alone in the park, almost certainly abandoned there in the cold and dark. We took her home, fed her, warmed her up, cuddled with her, had her examined. Now she’s in her new home with a friend and we’re very happy and also sad.
a small calico cat, tail drooping approaches across some asphalt. a floodlight casts her shadow in front of her. now inside, the same calico, obviously a kitten of around 6 months, perches on the viewer’s chest and peers down at the camera. you can see by her eyes that she is relaxed enough to consider a nap.the kitten considers the viewer from a padded ledge in front of a sunny window. she is curled in a ball, chin on paws.
