This is also an example of why implementation science matters: It’s not just developing biomedical interventions—it’s making sure people can actually use them correctly, consistently, & confidently by helping clinics with effective strategies to do so within the constraints of their systems.

#PrEP is extremely effective at preventing HIV—but only when people take it consistently. So when misconceptions get in the way, they directly reduce how well this powerful prevention tool works in the real world.

We found that most young men who have sex with men believe that taking PrEP while drinking could be harmful or “toxic.” 🍷💊 👉 The problem? These beliefs aren’t supported by medical evidence—but they can still lead people to skip doses or avoid starting PrEP altogether. And that matters a lot.

Excited to share our new paper just published in AIDS & Behavior. Free access: link.springer.com/article/10.1... This study looks at something that might seem simple—but has big implications for HIV prevention: what people believe about how PrEP interacts with alcohol.

In our cohort of 703 LGBTQ young adults 10.2% were exposed to these practices, typically around the time of puberty. Exposure was associated with later elevated blood pressure, increased systemic inflammation, and higher odds of self-reported hypertension diagnosis with dose-response relationship.
