Been experimenting again with ways of automatically visualizing the data we collect with the Mothbox. New ones are doing shape packing instead of just rectangle packing and it makes it feel a bit more organic (i like how the bugs fill in the gaps between the big cicada for instance). #SciArt

a lot of insects all packed in together from insect data

This was one of the most fun mysteries I knew of in Panama (and C. And S. America)--one of the largest moths in the world, whose caterpillar and host plant remained unknown to scientists. Its caterpillar has finally been found, a chonky zebra that turns into one of the most spectacular moths ever...

Something that makes me really happy is that i got my old laptop here, with its gpu cranking as hard as it can, but instead of doing something wasteful and stupid like mining Bitcoin or making nfts, it's spitting out cool bugs i found on my most recent trip! It's so rewarding!

There are many anti-predatory adaptations that help insects stay safe in the wild. These include jaws, spikes, and false eyes, which can be used to bite, inject venom, or deter potential predators. I love insects and their fascinating defense mechanisms! #naturalhistory #evolution #insects

Just got back from an incredible expedition with the team @dinalab.bsky.social to survey for biodiversity and deploy an innovative new technology called the Mothbox. The compact and portable device autonomously attracts, photographs, and categorizes night flying insects.

Here’s a quick roundup of highlights from research we published in 2024, on unequal exchange, ecosocialism, and post-capitalist transformation. As always, free PDFs are available via the link at the end of the thread. 🧵
