Haircut One Hundred Rolls Back the Years in LA
Haircut One Hundred is an interesting band. You hear that very-eighties name and, if you're yet to be initiated, your mind immediate goes to the glorious but undeniable silliness of the likes of Kajagoogoo. But then, anyone already ordained into the cult of Nick Heyward should no better. A keen student and fan of post-punk/art-rock collectives like XTC and the Talking Heads, Heyward has been a pop star and teen heartthrob for portions of his life, but he's also a very serious muso type. The story of Haircut One Hundred is actually relatively short, despite stretching across multiple decades. There […] The post Haircut One Hundred Rolls Back the Years in LA first appeared on Music Connection Magazine.

Aespa at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles
No one does immersive world-building quite like K-pop girl group aespa. The quartet (Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning) performed for a sold-out crowd at Los Angeles’ Intuit Dome on Oct. 3, inviting fans into the futuristic universe of their SYNK : COMPLæXITY World Tour. Through video interludes, the story followed aespa’s conflict with altered versions of their digital avatars. Their 23-song set brought that world to life through big hits, fan favorites, and distinctive solo and unit stages. aespa opened their set […] The post Aespa at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles first appeared on Music Connection Magazine.

"Jazz Money Vol. 2: Swingin’ R&B" by Zacchae’us Paul
Redeye WorldwideProducer: Zacchae’us Paul Zacchae’us Paul returns with Volume 2 (following 2024’s Jazz Money), in a 17-track project featuring spoken word (Marshall Allen, Eric Wyatt), emcee work (donSMITH, Happy Qavah), and navigating modern jazz, hip-hop and neo soul. Walking the line between edgy street and traditional sound, with instrumentals from Kebbi Williams, Morgan Guerin, Keyon Harrold, Eric Wyatt, and more, improvised solos and lyrical interludes provide intense jazz underpinnings. Interesting backing harmonies, syncopated beats and looping hooks add to the mix, while conflicting motifs juxtapose gentler-vibed moments in an intriguing journey for the musical connoisseur. Yaz “Don’t Go” Jacob Floyd Ross, who records as Crumpler, told us about his love for a Vince Clark Yaz lick... Jacob Floyd Ross: In the fall of 1982, I had just started middle school and was living with my mom and sister in Tyler, TX when my older brother came to visit from Dallas with a fancy new contraption called a “Walkman.” Not only was it the smallest cassette player I’d ever seen, but it also came with stereo headphones. New Music Critique of Michele Gedney
Contact: harmonysing@gmail.com Web: openbookmusic.com Seeking: Booking, Press, Film/TV Style: Singer/Songwriter Michele Gedney’s work as Open Book with her late husband Rick Gedney was built on thoughtful songwriting and interwoven harmonies, and that lived-in quality remains central. With five albums and folk songwriting accolades under her belt, the performances are steady and assured, though sometimes almost too comfortable in their pocket; the vocal delivery can settle into a similar shape from song to song. Gedney’s lyrics frequently reach for profound emotional depths, but the restrained vocal delivery can make the tracks feel a bit monotonous. Love Riot Can't Do Without Creampuff, a 1982 Ibanez Artist
Lisa Mathews of Baltimore band Love Riot told us about her love for Creampuff... Lisa Mathews: Let’s get one thing straight from the start: I’m not the world’s best guitarist, but nobody has more fun playing. I love my guitars and pedals, and though I can’t talk technically about what they do, I like the sounds they help me get. I go for a warm sound, so my stage guitar is a 1982 Ibanez Artist. The Hollywood Bowl Celebrates 90 Years of Buddy Guy
There are few finer sights in music than that of legendary blues man Buddy Guy walking onto the Hollywood Bowl stage, like a man a fraction of his age. Guy turned 90 in July of this year, and he's one of the few old school artists of any genre, never mind the blues, still performing. At the iconic Hollywood Bowl, Guy was ably supported by Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, with special guest Joe Bonamassa. Those two men have done as much as just about anyone to carry the blues forward, and they sounded wonderful here. Contact: cortodaz@gmail.com Web: faultyvault.com Seeking: Booking, Label Style: Hip-Hop, Alternative Jay Divad strikes a smooth, resonant balance between atmospheric sample flipping and an effortlessly magnetic vocal flow. Tracks like “Shadows” and “Often” are low-key in temperature but high in confidence and what elevates Divad above the crowded indie-hip-hop noise is a tangible sense of originality. His sharp beat selections and deliberate lyrical cadence showcase a musician deeply connected to his craft. Bali-based producer/DJ STAY GOLDEN says that his deep connection with electronic music began long before he became an artist. "From around 2010, I was going to techno parties, discovering downtempo and traveling to different music festivals and Burning Man-related events around the world," he says. "I was fascinated not only by the music itself, but by the environments and communities that formed around it. In 2019, that interest became much more focused. A decade of touring and headline shows has sharpened his instincts as both guitarist and storyteller, and it shows. Tracks like “Forbidden Fruit” kick off with an antique, dusty charm before charging full steam ahead. But “(Not) Easy to Love” is the real find here: more composed on paper, yet it’s where Biilmann finally lets the vocal off the leash. Take “Serrated” off their latest album Dear Billionaires (due October 23): the tight instrumentation screams classic blues-rock, yet the vocals almost lean into theatrical performance art. "This Mirror Weighs a Ton" By Interpol
Partisan Records Producer: Andrew Wyatt The post-punk revival legends toss out any notion of a stripped-back sound for their eighth album, giving audiences orchestral instruments, complex production, and ever-so-dystopian imagery and messaging. The record is just as propulsive and melancholic as their acclaimed earlier works, but polished to reveal the nuance of every rhythm and texture. Glam and new-wave influences spill in; coupled with Andrew Wyatt’s pop-heavy ear for production. The album is easily Interpol at their best, but through a new lens. Staff Picks With Broken Baby, Megadeth, Ecca Vandal, TUSHI and Neutral Milk Hotel
Editorial Intern Sierra Levesque Megadeth "I Don't Care" From Megadeth’s final album (maybe)…a song with a simple, angry message that rebellious souls of any age can sing along to. Associate Editor Lina Lecaro Ecca Vandal "Molly" When Vandal’s blistering bop “Molly” popped up in my Instagram feed late last year, I knew my algorithm was doing its job. The catchy track’s title might be a drug ref, but the song is much deeper, exploring how relationships fade and how getting faded might be an escape, but it only masks the rough stuff. Speaking of rough, Vandal (who is of Sri […] The post Staff Picks With Broken Baby, Megadeth, Ecca Vandal, TUSHI and Neutral Milk Hotel first appeared on Music Connection Magazine.

Margot Sinclair at Cat's Cradle, North Carolina
Web: margotsinclair.com Players: Kyle Mix, vocals; Luke Sutherland, guitar; Carson Baer, guitar; Owen Rice, bass guitar, background vocals; Donovan Hess, drums, background vocals A totally unexpected quartet of Orange County escapees—perhaps slightly bewildered to find themselves this far east—takes the stage and, within seconds, traps the room in an opening crescendo. The “wow” factor is immediately off the chain. Mutinous electrons ricochet off the walls, rafters and bar, coalescing into soaring minor chords, barre-chord power surges and enormous slabs of guitar before somehow resolving back into the major. Meet Margot Sinclair. Their first three songs are a gut punch to […] The post Margot Sinclair at Cat's Cradle, North Carolina first appeared on Music Connection Magazine.

Release Radar: Maddie Zahm Prescribes Everything, All The Time
Maddie Zahm has never been shy about feeling things loudly, but Everything All The Time might be the first time she's built an entire album around the idea that feeling too much isn't a personality flaw, it's the whole point. The project's title track came out of an unlikely place: a video that went viral for all the wrong reasons. "I wrote this song after I had a video go viral after I had a bit of anxiety about how overwhelming the world seems right now," Zahm explains. What followed was a pile-on she didn't ask for. "It hit the […] The post Release Radar: Maddie Zahm Prescribes Everything, All The Time first appeared on Music Connection Magazine.

The Riff That Blew My Mind: Bart & the Brats recalls the Kids
Bart De Vraantijik of Bart & the Brats told us about his love for a Kids From Belgium lick... Bart De Vraantijik: The riff that blew my mind is most certainly "Do You Love the Nazis" by late '70s punk legends the Kids, from Belgium. First time I heard it I must’ve been 17, I was still very much into melodic punk stuff like NOFX, but liked listening to that radio show a bunch of older guys I knew made at the time in my town La Rochelle. They’d play a lot of greasier, raunchier rock 'n' roll/punk bands like […] The post The Riff That Blew My Mind: Bart & the Brats recalls the Kids first appeared on Music Connection Magazine.

Sad13 Can't Do Without Her Logitech Lift
Sad13 is the electropop alter ego of Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz, and she told us about her love for her Logitech Lift... Sad13: In the studio—whether at my own space or working out of someone else’s—I like to approach gear selection with a combination of novelty-seeking and long-term comfort; weird new pedals or plugins are just as important as my tried-and-true mics and amps. But the gear that really got me over the finish line with 1331 (and was unique to this mixtape) was a new vertical mouse. I’d seen another producer friend post about the Logitech Lift and, as someone […] The post Sad13 Can't Do Without Her Logitech Lift first appeared on Music Connection Magazine.

Megadeth Rocks The Grammy Museum
On a warm Thursday night, right in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles amidst tall buildings, honking horns, and a thin layer of grey smog, Megadeth visited The Grammy Museum’s Ray Charles Terrace for a special Q&A and live performance, which proved to be almost too heavy for the usually quiet museum to handle. For the sold-out event, excited metal fans lined up on the sidewalk of Figueroa Street, some waiting for hours prior to doors opening at around 6:30 p.m. Slowly, people were let in and made their way up to the fifth floor of the museum, home to […] The post Megadeth Rocks The Grammy Museum first appeared on Music Connection Magazine.

An Out Take With Composer Yang Zhang
Web: instagram.com/yangzhangmercuryorbitmusic Most recent: Quantum Prelude: The Evolution of the Universe Composer Yang Zhang’s debut large-scale orchestral work, “Quantum Prelude: The Evolution of the Universe,” grew out of a question about a single musical note and how it might be heard differently than expected. “It began with how we define the fundamental building blocks of music,” Zhang says. “I was fascinated by the concept of imagining how a computer divides one single pitch, not to look for greater precision but to explore uncertainty and ambiguity. My task was how to translate that, both artistically and emotionally, so people could feel […] The post An Out Take With Composer Yang Zhang first appeared on Music Connection Magazine.
