One of the problems is that it's easier to assign these games to other genres rather than grouping them as a distinct microgenre. WWF WrestleMania is considered a wrestling game with fighting game mechanics so we don't necessarily group it with Street Smart, which Wikipedia calls a beat 'em up.

We lack a good term for games that are basically 2D fighters at heart but allow walking in eight directions like a beat 'em up. 2D8D (two dimensional eight directional) FG is accurate but abstruse; Belt Fighter is too cute by half; Pit Fighter-like gets the point across in a depressing way.
