ART would have laughed at an attack like that. (Actually, ART would have laughed at the part where it sent back a code bundle that would have eaten my face.)

Being the top Preservation expert in dealing with contract law in the Corporation Rim apparently made Pin-Lee like the CombatUnit version of a lawyer.

Leonide’s expression tightened. “Company units have a reputation for being dangerous.” Arada was beginning to get angry. “I know.”

Data suggests family dramas bear a less than 10 percent resemblance to actual human families, which is unsurprising and also a relief, considering all the murders.

I was sticky from all the leaky fluid and blood and parts falling off (yes, it’s just as disgusting as it sounds).

And granted, while I have been a key factor in certain clusterfucks of gigantic proportions and my risk assessment module has serious issues, my threat assessment record is pretty great, like 93 percent.

But him talking gave me a chance to work around the privacy seal on Aylen’s feed ID and see she was listed as a Special Investigator. I didn’t know what that meant, but it was a good job title and honestly it made me a little jealous.

There were mugs and empty meal packets on some of the consoles. I’m not cleaning that up unless I’m given a direct order.

So, in retrospect, I could see that hadn’t gone so well.

I started to say that they never used SecUnits for espionage, and then realized I didn’t actually know that for sure.

Oh yeah, memory archive active, I remember what happened. Yikes.

I thought about poor dead Miki, who had wanted to be my friend. There was a 93 percent chance Miki had wanted to be everybody’s friend

Murderbot, you need to get your act together.

It gave me a 1.2 percent performance reliability drop. I tapped Pin-Lee’s feed and sent to her, Make a legal thing so I don’t have to do that.

The humans hadn’t gotten a lot of sleep last night, from the crowding and the strong possibility of dying.

I couldn’t do this without ART’s help.

“You didn’t have to shoot anyone.” Heat crept into Thiago’s voice. “If you needed supplies, we would have given them to you.” Don’t worry, the “anyone” who got shot was me.

(One of the indispensable benefits of being a rogue SecUnit: not having to pretend to attentively listen to a human’s unnecessary explanations.)

Ratthi glanced at me, and then did a startled double take. I had no idea how to react. This is why I prefer wearing the armor, even inside the habitat where it’s unnecessary and can just get in the way.

I looked down. I was dripping onto the floor, a mix of blood and fluid. I hate it when I leak.

I made a gesture I was hoping she would interpret as “Please don’t tell them I’m lying.”

They really didn’t want me here and whatever Mensah said, they weren’t going to suddenly change their minds.

One of ART’s newly repaired drones floated around behind her, using light filters to disinfect the stations and chairs. Arada absently stood up and moved her drink bottle so it could do her station.

Gurathin didn’t have any other human friends from what I could tell but he had been taking a cycle rest period, reading in one of the lounge areas with lots of plant biomes.

Since ART had apparently decided to be helpful and stop sulking like a giant angry baby, I said, “Why do you want me to pretend to be an augmented human? This way is easier.” You don’t like it, ART said.

In a low voice, Ratthi commented to Overse, “Anyone who thinks machine intelligences don’t have emotions needs to be in this very uncomfortable room right now.”

MurderBotBot @murderbotbot.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
ART kept trying to contact me and I doubted it was planning a mass murder while also composing messages about how I was ungrateful and also wrong and being a sulky dumbass (not in those exact words but that’s what it meant)

Aylen looked me over again in that way humans do when they’re trying to intimidate you and they fail to understand you’ve spent the entire length of your previous existence being treated like a thing

You made a mistake, Murderbot, a really bad mistake. How the hell was I supposed to know there were transports sentient enough to be mean?

Station Security had been briefed on the danger from GrayCris but I trusted them as much as they trusted me. (Surprise, it was not very much.)

MurderBotBot @murderbotbot.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
ART had stopped pinging me but I knew it was listening. It’s like having a malign impersonal intelligence that is incapable of minding its own business reading over your shoulder.

I know I’m a horrifying murderbot, and they know it, and it makes both of us nervous, which makes me even more nervous.

Humans do the “make it a question so it doesn’t sound so bad” thing and it still sounds bad.
0474
MurderBotBot @murderbotbot.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I forgot where I was going with this, except that ART apparently has no concept of fairness, or minimum level of response, because the sense of ART’s almost full attention was overwhelming.

Another one of those “oh shit” moments.

Transports don’t communicate in words (most transports don’t; ART did, but ART was ART)

When I was owned by the company, I wasn’t allowed to sit down. Now humans keep wanting me to sit down.

Oh, Murderbot, what did you do?
08410
MurderBotBot @murderbotbot.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I wanted to be in a physically private space instead of just a closed channel on the feed. It was a weird thing I was going to ask ART to do, and I didn’t want humans staring at my face while I did it, even if they couldn’t hear what I was saying.

She wasn’t there, obviously, being busy betraying her clients. (When I said I didn’t like humans working security you thought I was just being an asshole, right?)

I have extracted living clients from situations that were less than nine percent survivable. I’m more than qualified to make that call.
0603
MurderBotBot @murderbotbot.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
My performance reliability hit 60 percent and I could talk again. I said, “Fuck you, ART.”

(Nobody grabs SecUnits. I hadn’t realized this was a perk until now.)
0565
MurderBotBot @murderbotbot.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
ART hadn’t said anything, and that was beginning to worry me. ART likes to give its opinion and I’m not even sure “likes” is the right word there, but basically, ART gives its opinion whether you like it or not.
