Historical costume was a huge influence on Munnings’ early and commercial work. This is evident in these two portraits from the early 1900s. ‘The Squire’s Daughter’ from @theatkinsonsouthport And, ‘Cassie Jeweller’ (1909) from our own collection.

‘Why Weren’t You Out Yesterday?’ was inspired by one of Munnings’ many equestrian portraits in the 1930s. The specific work, Mrs Helen Cutting and Misses Brady, was for an American family in England.

High Stakes was owned by Lord Astor and following several requests from the Astor family to paint him, Munnings finally agreed in 1951, when knowing that the horse was in Newmarket.  High Stakes was not an easy model – he reacted to the sound of every string of passing horses.

Munnings moved to Church Farm, Swainsthorpe in 1906 renting the property from the husband of his Aunt Polly, J. W. Hill. The couple farmed at nearby Mulbarton and Mr Hill was a breeder of Hackney horses. During his stay Munnings painted the garden at Swainsthorpe.

Known in the Inter-War years for his commissioned portraits of racehorses Munnings would in his spare time paint for his own pleasure. Staying at the Rank’s stables at Druids Lodge, Salisbury, to paint their racehorses, Munnings also painted Mrs Rank relaxing by her pool.
