The Story of Mabel Pepper - This is a relatively new research topic, and as I delved deeper into my research on Mabel, I stumbled across the St. Mary Magdalene Refuge and Night Shelter in The Newarke, which bears a striking resemblance to the infamous Magdalene Laundry scandals that occurred in Ireland. However, it's important to recognise that, even though their names sound alike, these two institutions are not the same. Additionally, in Leicester, there were many homes specifically established for women and girls who have "fallen" from societal expectations. This topic is fascinating and requires further investigation.

Enjoyed discussing Peppermint Billy with the #MeltonMowbray #WI this afternoon. My research on Billy's life convinced many of his innocence in the 1856 Toll Gate murder. I was also told about another murder in Melton, which I am looking into. peppermintbilly.com
William Brown was a returned convict.
He has spent 13 tears in Van Dieman’s Land... 1843 - 1856.
A ten year transportation sentence. Seven of those years were spent at the New Norfolk Lunatic Asylum.
After receiving his Certificate of Freedom in 1853 he went to mainland Victoria. Three years later he returned home to England.
50 days later he was executed for a murder in Melton Mowbray which took place on 19 June 1855. Billy was executed on 25 July 1856 - he was the last person publicly hanged in Leicester.

In 1459, #HenryVI spent the #TwelveDaysofChristmas @ #LeicesterCastle. The prudish monarch was livid when a group of local lasses revealed their bosoms & performed a provocative dance in front of him- "Fie, fie, for shame!" were Henry's parting words as he dashed to his privy chambers.
A bit of medieval Christmas joy..... Henry VI was not impressed with us Leicester lasses. ......
In 1459, King Henry VI spent the Christmas and New Year at Leicester Castle. The Twelve Days of Christmas were filled with an abundance of lavish and ostentatious events, including banquets, balls, and various sporting events, all designed to entertain the countless guests and onlookers who eagerly partook in the festivities. This was the court at its most visible - a rare opportunity for commoners to catch a fleeting glimpse of the royal family as they made their grand procession to the tournament grounds, adorned in their most luxurious and fur-lined attire. In the rare instance that the underprivileged were fortunate enough, they could potentially feast like royalty - or at the very least, indulge in scraps from the lavish spread at the king's grand table. Interestingly, it was not uncommon for a staggering 24 courses to be served at these extravagant banquets, and it was customary for the royal chefs to prepare an excessive amount of food, not only to impress their esteemed guests, but also with the intention of providing sustenance to those in need once the festivities had concluded.
In turn, the town folk frequently favoured the court with glad tidings of their own. In the lively and festive halls, merry carollers, skilled jugglers, traditional mummers, enchanting magicians, captivating actors, talented musicians, eloquent poets, and skilled bards would all gather together to contribute their unique talents to the evening's entertainment. Usually the court found such past times highly amusing, but not always. The prudish monarch, Henry VI, was absolutely livid and incensed when a group of local lasses, who were hired by a mischievous young lord, boldly revealed their bosoms and proceeded to perform a scandalous and provocative dance in front of the King and his court. "Fie, fie, for shame!" were Henry's parting shots as he dashed to his privy chambers.Inside the grand hall in Leicester Castle in the Medieval period.

OTD 20 Dec 1926 - The City of #Leicester adopted its new Coat of Arms following its restoration of City Status in 1919.
On this day , 20 December 1926 the City of Leicester adopted its new Coat of Arms following its restoration of City Status in 1919.

The Arms of the Town of Leicester, the Cinquefoil and Wyvern were confirmed on the town at the Heraldic Visitation of 1619. The Cinquefoil and Wyvern come from the earlier motifs of the first Earl of Leicester, Robert De Beaumont (1040 - 1118).

The city status was granted in 1919 and following application by the City Council in 1926, the College of Arms allowed two supporters to be added to the design. The two Lancastrian Lions were added on either side of the Cinquefoil and above the towns motto “Always the same”.
When the Duke of Lancaster inherited the Earldom of Leicester, he held land in Leicester, hense the Lancastrian connection.

In November 1884, Tom Norman decided to assume the role of managing Joseph Merrick. Tom Norman, taking a good look at Joseph, thought “Oh God, I can't use you”. However, looking into Joseph's eyes, Tom reached out and shook his hand, & said, “Well, Mr Merrick, I'll call you Joseph if I may.”
Campbell Street Station in Leicester, where Joseph left his home town to travel to London. Station, now demolished was built in 1840123 Whitechapek Road where Joseph was exhibited in London. Tom Norman - Joseph's managerJoseph Merrick
