![The Final Run
The Image:
Captured by 20-year-old amateur photographer Aaron McLamb from a high-rise window, the picture shows the bright red ladder truck cutting through the city's crisis with the smoking twin towers ahead. It became one of the most enduring symbols of first responder bravery.
The Crew:
Aboard were six firefighters from Brooklyn Heights: Lt. Robert Regan, Firefighter Joseph Agnello, Firefighter Vernon Cherry, Firefighter Scott Davidson, Firefighter Leon Smith, and Firefighter Peter Vega (along with Captain Martin Egan Jr. who was also with the unit). [1] (
The Mission:
They arrived at the Marriott World Trade Center Hotel, located between the towers, and went inside to help evacuate hundreds of trapped civilians. The Ultimate Sacrifice: When the South Tower collapsed, it crushed the hotel, and all the men aboard Ladder 118 perished. Their legacy and the photograph remain a poignant reminder of those who ran toward danger.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:5vae372ohpjvnqdyol22n67s/bafkreibrxyh624wc62sgw5veppqvdxnc7bg62jwadpjqxs26ffdrwl7a4u)
