I’m looking forward to joining the @acesediting.bsky.social virtual conference on editing this week. So many great sessions—I’m glad I’ll have access to the recordings for ones I may have missed! ✏️ #editing

Multiple people have recommended “More Than Words” by @biblioracle.bsky.social, about the importance of the human act of writing in a rapidly changing AI-infused landscape of word generation. Professionally and personally, I spend a lot of time with words. I recommend in turn! 📚 #writing #books

In the age of AI, I find myself gravitating to books like this one from 2013, about slowing down and really putting in the work for the writing and editing process. I don’t want to go back to typewriters, but I do miss edits on paper sometimes. 📝

I finished another really interesting read by science writer @carlzimmer.com called “Air-Borne”—a history of studying life in our atmosphere. Meanwhile: Once eradicated in the U.S., measles has made a sad comeback in the U.S. due to falling vaccination rates. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

I recently finished devouring this lovely little writers’ dialogue on the art of the sentence. I was pleased to see some of my routine checks on the list, with plenty more to consider. (1/2)

I was excited to score a signed copy of Barbara Gastel’s “Medical Editing”at the AMWA annual meeting last fall. It’s full of tips and resources I can use in my work. Students and others curious about working in medical editing may find it particularly valuable! #editing #scicomm

Today I’m supporting the @inacademyofscience.bsky.social with fun hands-on engagement for kids at the annual “Celebrate Science Indiana” festival. I enjoy this event and all the great people I’ve met at both CSI & IAS. Join us in our community for supporting science & science education in our state!

I was thinking about Paramecium last night—how cool & mysterious these single-celled microbes are. All the scientists I know are depressed about the politics of science funding. Maybe it’s time for everyone to go back to school, stare at Paramecium under the microscope, & wonder at the world again.

I’m apparently too worn out by the news plus trying to live my life that I’m just not using this site the way I wanted to. But I appreciate the posts I read when I remember to check in on the people I follow. Thank you for your content! Here’s a beautiful neighborhood hibiscus for your efforts.

Ending the week on a positive note: I completed my work as a peer reviewer for Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant proposals this week. It was an interesting and rewarding process! Also, the sun is shining, and spring is on the way.

When I’m not thinking about science or science communication, I’m often making music. I had a lot of fun yesterday introducing a small group of people to handbells. Music brings me joy and can bring people together to lift our spirits and foster a sense of connection. #handbells #music

A restoring faith in humanity moment for today. Picked up this book at the local public library, where a kind library worker returned to me a get-well card I had used as a bookmark that they found in a book I had previously returned. Thank you, wonderful libraries. 📚💚
