However, the judge also took into account a number of mitigating factors, including that Molloy was experiencing difficult personal circumstances after his mother's death, that he ceased the activity of his own volition and had shown genuine
remorse.

No, right, of course, most companies do not report adjusted earnings that adjust out non-cash charitable giving, because "non-cash charitable giving" is not a big thing at most companies. But tech companies
often do adjust out stock-based employee compensation,[7] and that's obviously what's going on here. It's just that the way Anthropic compensates employees is through charitable giving.

That's a thorny problem, but it's the league's problem, not ours. It's one that will ultimately be solved by the lawyers and public relations executives who have been raking in billable hours for seven years. I have little faith that it will be solved in a way that feels just and even less that it will solve the underlying issues that created it. The Premier League may solve its City problem or it may not. But it won't lay a glove on the real problem. City's importance to the Premier League both as a brand and as a business is the real scandal here.

A small crowd has gathered, filled with cowboy hats and serious mustaches, all excited to tell me about Wills. But what they do is, they talk about how much they love coming here. How much they like seeing their friends every year. One of them, Mike Molten, says he comes here annually, this year with his kids and grandkids. He's got a cool hat, sweat-stained and hand-creased the way a hundred bass players in Austin are trying to replicate. "It's not as rowdy as it used to be," Molten says. "Used to come out here and there'd be a million-dollar RV parked next to a pup tent full of hippies."

Film production 'bigger than bass reeves' coming to waxahachie Director Andres Chavarria is bringing a film production to Waxahachie that he says will be “bigger than Bass Reeves,” and he is excited to see the project coming together. Featuring the tequila trade between Jalisco, Mexico and Dallas, Texas during Prohibition, “Hijos del Agave” (Spanish for “Sons of the Agave”) is described as a crime thriller and a love story that will be released as both a short film and the pilot episode of an ongoing series. The film’s production team plans to feature several historic downtown Waxahachie buildings in the story and reports that it is actively seeking about 40 locals to serve as extras.

"We're not trying to make any money out of this. Don't make your own bootleg copies and throw them on eBay, or throw them on Twitter of all places." Nevertheless, the clandestine nature of these efforts weighs on Draper: "It would be nice if there was at least a little bit more recognition of unofficial preservation efforts. I feel like there's a gigantic weight about to come crashing down on me at any second because, heaven forbid, I bought another twenty laserdiscs and captured audio tracks and bought VHS tapes on eBay to compare audio captures to fix the bad audio they didn't care about the first time around."

A related faith is political: That once lawmakers and voters understand the advantages of clean power, they will inevitably support it. "You kind of feel like, once everybody gets the facts, they're going to be there with you," Steve McBee, the CEO of clean energy investment firm Huck Capital, told me. McBee does not share that complacency-this year he founded a new advocacy group to bring clean energy executives into direct contact with policymakers-but he understands the temptation to "feel like you're on the right side of history."

There is something a bit funny about Nvidia announcing "man, we have soooooo much money that we don't know what to do with it" a month and a half after announcing "strategic partnerships to establish independent compute financing platforms ... to mobilize over $500 billion of third-party capital for the buildout of Al infrastructure over time." Like, last month, Nvidia announced that it was going to gently help guide $500 billion of investors' money into Al infrastructure; this month, Nvidia announced that it has $235 billion of surplus money that it's going to hand back to investors. Just invest the $235 billion in Al infrastructure, no? But, no. The basic structure of the Al buildout is that:
1. Everyone else borrows money against their expected future Al revenues,
2. Nvidia helps them do it,
3. They give the money to Nvidia for chips, and
4. Nvidia gives the money to its shareholders.

Jäger’s position appears to be a kind of post-Marxism, focused on the nation-states of the Global North, in which the problem of reviving socialist mass politics is diagnosed through the historical question of the death of mass politics. The true form of Hyperpolitics is that of The pamphlet, a format famously amenable to left-wing purposes. Yet, as the example of the Communist Manifesto (1848) shows, a successful pamphlet is one that comes out of the gates swinging, its punches clear and confident. Hyperpolitics pulls its punches, favoring the maneuvers of the feint, the duck, and the dive. It might as well be titled “Should Something Be Done?”—a diffident update of Lenin’s famous formulation, the title of his 1902 pamphlet on revolutionary strategy: What Is to Be Done? Lacking confidence and coherence, Jäger’s book reads more like an introduction to a larger work that does not yet exist.

Maybe apocalyptic fascism does indeed encapsulate our current moment, but after pushing readers to the nightmarish precipice we stand on today, what do Klein and Taylor offer for those of us who have no choice but to look for a solution?

The school even included their mileage totals from the rentals in the release to me. They probably shouldn't have!
During the fall, each cart drove an average of 5.5 miles over five days. That is a mile a day! To save staffers, recruits, and/or coaches the horrors of 15 minutes of strolling in the beautiful late fall and early spring Los Angeles weather, UCLA spent $95,000.

I do think if we're taking that arc as a whole, from "Old Town Road" to present, there might be something to the argument that country is currently winning the broad-spectrum palatability wars - passing the "does it fit as background music" test in a variety of scenarios. I certainly find that a much more compelling argument than "the culture of rural working-class whites can symbolize an unconstrained way of life that stands apart from the stifling, all-encompassing H.R. bureaucracy that everyone else lives in." How the Times manages to talk down to both its imagined readers - coastal, progressive etc. - and these "unconstrained" hicks at once is really something!

Erickson strongest observation is that these forces don’t need to be coordinated to reinforce one another: one supplies money, institutions, intellectual justification, and cadres, while the other supplies subculture, militancy, and a mass political language. But Erickson is unable to identify the correct causal mechanism for this breakdown, attributing it to the corrupting “infection” of the ideas of Nazi jurist Carl Schmitt and ultimately to Satan himself. That may be convenient rhetorically, but it is intellectually remiss. It performs the right wing’s favorite diagnosis: the healthy body infected by an outside agent; it exhibits no curiosity or understanding of why or how the right is susceptible to this “takeover.” As Cassius said to his co-conspirator, “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings.” Erickson is structurally unable to recognize the process, because he’s part of it. He suffers from the selective blindness of conservative intellectuals—I’m using that term very generously.

Finally, the researchers looked back over 550 million years of evolutionary time. They found the same two-origin brain pattern in chickens; zebrafish; and, remarkably, in acorn worms, tiny creatures living on the ocean floor that share a distant common ancestor with humans. Jellyfish, which diverged from humans about 600 to 700 million years ago, have two nervous systems at different ends of their body.

“Our research suggests that evolution took two existing neural systems and pushed them together spatially,” Loh said. “Having the brain as one organ would probably be more efficient, but we rely on this primordial way to make the brain as two separate pieces.”

“I was surprised at our findings because the word ‘brain’ implies a contiguous organ that likely has a singular origin,” Jokhai said. “But even 500 million years ago, there were these separate neural systems, which now almost operate as one, which is very cool.”

And, as herky-jerky as the current economic system is, you'd be strained to make a good argument that it isn't an improvement. Roster-building has become precarious, and fans are understandably bummed that there are no longer guarantees or even high likelihoods of seeing a player develop across a four- or five-year career. The sport's leaders can, should, and won't get serious about recognizing players as employees and collectively bargaining with them in a fashion that would yield a more stable structure. But for now, players do get a piece of the enormous revenues they generate as a class, and that's better than the organized theft of their wages that schools and NCAA leadership perpetrated for a century and a half.

Here is a Wall Street Journal profile of Jacob Coxon, the former Anthropic researcher who became famous for quitting because he thinks Anthropic is going to kill everyone. He's not like other Al doomers, though:
He didn't strike friends as especially likely to leave his job in Al for ethical reasons. He wasn't even a major player in the tightknit community of Al safety advocates who discuss grim scenarios at happy hours across San Francisco.
Except for ...
• He was on the UK team at the International Mathematical Olympiad, and
"of the six members of Coxon's team, three ended up working for Al labs - including one who also recently quit Anthropic."
• "Coxon after college fell in with a small but influential community of rationalists," ah.
• "Coxon lived in London at the Newspeak House, a self-described independent residential college," ah.

That is: Maybe you can spend a small amount of money to manipulate the market for the value of computer chips as long-term debt collateral. The whole Al economy is, arguably, built on that value. If it goes down, maybe hedge funds will notice. Maybe that will crash the prices of Al stocks and bonds. Maybe you can make a lot of money in the biggest market by spending a little money in the compute futures market.

Dead dove but god what an awful lede
One of the films featured in the Criterion
Channel's "Southern Gothic" series is Baby
Doll (1956). It's based on Tennessee
Williams's one-act plays 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and The Unsatisfactory Supper, which Williams adapted for the screen in collaboration with the most famous interpreter of his work, director Elia Kazan. It begins with the lurid, sexed-up horns of Kenyon Hopkins's score vamping as if in accompaniment to a strip show as we approach a grimly dilapidated Mississippi plantation house with grimy pillars like the post-Civil War plantation in Gone with the Wind. And there we have in a single film moment a perfect summation of the Southern Gothic.
