We’re pleased to announce Whelan Wednesdays, a new schedule for original art releases that will carry us through spring. We’ll be adding an original to the shop every Wednesday at 11am ET, starting with this preliminary concept for WIND AND TRUTH. www.michaelwhelan.com/shop/to-hold...
Tonal preliminary concept for WIND AND TRUTH featuring Dalinar Kholin in Alethi uniform standing with his back to the audience on a platform high in the mountains. He holds his arms up with his left hand clenched in a fist. There is a glow about him and a book is floating over his head. The sky is made of a broad swirling vortex of clouds with an opening at the center. The mountains are beautifully detailed, jagged with snow covering steep slopes and filling the crevices in the rock.

EMPIRE (1980) Acrylic - 28" x 18" H. Beam Piper is perhaps not as widely read these days as later 20th Century Grandmasters like Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert Heinlein, but his contributions to science fiction are undeniable. 1/3
A headless statue in stately robes sits upon a stone throne hovering in front of a vibrant blue spiral galaxy. One arm rests lazily gripping a scepter that on close examination could be a long slender spacecraft with spherical bow section. The other hand is cupped palm up with dozens of planets hovering just above as if within its sovereignty. A tall shiny helmet floats empty just above the statue's shoulders. Rendered in tiny scale compared to the vast statue, a human figure stands at the foot of the throne.

NIGHTFROST (2011) Acrylic on Watercolor Paper www.michaelwhelan.com/galleries/ni...
Set in profile against a busy starscape, a regal woman exhales a frosty breath that starts as a delicate spiral before dissolving overhead. Her skin is pale and her wardrobe decidedly wintry, mostly white with pearlescent accents. She wears an ornate headdress, detailed in ornamentation, all swirls and flourishes. Her gown made of feathers and snowflakes opens high on the chest to expose more pale skin but she seems unaffected by the chill of winter.

THE EAGLES ARE COMING / AT THE END OF ALL THINGS (1978) Acrylic - 28" x 27" I suspect that watching this scene come to life in Peter Jackson's movie adaptation of THE RETURN OF THE KING was as thrilling for me as any fan of THE LORD OF THE RINGS. 1/5
With an arm draped over his shoulder, Samwise Gamgee props up an exhausted Frodo. The barefooted hobbits take refuge on a rock surrounded by burning orange lava flows. Sam cranes his neck, searching the skies in desperation as their shrinking island is about to be consumed. Dangling from a chain, Galadriel's gift flares in a brilliant starburst over Sam's chest. The sun seems to be struggling to gain foothold burning through layers of despair as a patch of blue suddenly opens in the roiling gray skies over Mordor. Behind Sam a trio of huge white eagles soar down at the last moment, swooping in with wings bathed in warm light and spread wide to glide over thermals of curling steam. Straddling the neck of the lead eagle, Gandalf—clad all in white with cloak flapping behind—holds his staff in one hand and raises his other arm.

DANCING IN A STRANGE SEA (2023) Acrylic on Canvas - 8" x 12" The other day I woke up from a wonderfully vivid dream. Swimming off the shore of a tropical isle, I was amazed at the beauty around me. The rich blues and greens of the water swirled in my thoughts all day. 1/3
Floating in a dark bubbly sea, a naked woman with flowing red hair spreads her arms wide, turning playfully to draw a transparently patterned cape behind her. Curious while passing by, a green sea dragon cranes its neck. Its sinuous body curves and rolls before finally looping back at the tip of its spaded tail. Foreclaws loll as it pauses between strokes, entranced by the aquatic dance. The woman holds out the ends of the jellyfish-like veil and it shifts in pattern as it flows in front of her. Leopard spots flare fiery in contrast passing over pale skin. Extending past her, the pattern morphs into abstract splotches much like the eyespots on a peacock feather, growing in size and shifting from green to blue to purple as the veil trails off panel.
