Mud and Stud - Lincolnshire's Indigenous Vernacular Building Technique

Lincolnshire has a long tradition of building in earth but, as with many things, the county does it a bit differently.

Mud and stud is a hybrid technique, combining earth and timber to cremate buildings which have responded to their environment for more than half a millennium, and which have the potential to inform building methods in the future too.

This talk will explore the technique, place it in its historical and geographical context and take a peek at how it might inform building in Lincolnshire - and perhaps beyond? - in a changing world.

Today has been a good day.
A photo of some of the mountains of Eryri, taken from Moel Penamnen. Green slopes fall away in the foreground, with a lake, forest and bigger mountains (Yr Wyddfa and Y Glyderau) are in the distance. The sky is blue and there is a small cloud sitting below the summit of Yr Wyddfa (formerly known as Snowdon)

I'm very much looking forward to speaking to Willoughby History Group (nr Alford) on Saturday about mud and stud. It's fun to be giving this talk in the heartland of the technique, and I'm also very excited to be able to share about the Mud & Stud Buildings project - and invite them to get involved.
A poster advertising the talk, with a large Lincolnshire flag and two photos of mud and stud cottages - low, white-painted thatched buildings. Across the top are a series of shields and flags representing Lincolnshire, England and Willoughby.

We're enjoying the stream and playing Star Realms - does it get any better?

Well it's 11 o'clock at night but it's snowing for the first time this year so I couldn't help sneaking out to enjoy it. The snow is really odd - soft and fluffy but weirdly dry in the hand, even when you take a handful back home to show the rest of the family!
A snowy scene, taken at night, of a triangle of roads with six trees in the middle, and old farm buildings on each side. The side roads are covered in snow - as is the grass - but the main road in the foreground is mostly clear

I'm absolutely delighted to share that I have just been appointed Project Officer for Lincolnshire County Council's new Mud and Stud project. Really looking forward to getting stuck into the first proper county-wide study of its indigenous building technique!
A mud and stud cottage with lovely daubed walls, thatched roof and brick plinth. It looks really inviting and makes you want to go in through the door and explore.

Really looking forward to @elponypisador.bsky.social in Selby tonight - and we got front row seats!
A surprisingly close-up photo of Selby Town Hall's stage, with various guitars, banjo, drum kit and fiddle. Just missing some Ponies!

Really looking forward to speaking at the 'Counting Chimneys - The Hearth Tax in Lincolnshire' conference on the 25th. Everyone is welcome, book in now! www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/counting-c...
Picture shows a mud and stud smokehood exposed when the thatch was removed. It is made of timber and earth walling, but has been cut off below the ridge line. It originally served two fireplaces. The rafters and ridge-piece are much altered, but bits of the reed under-lining of the ceiling within survive

A photo of an ochre-daubed, single storey mud and stud cottage in Hacconby, with the front door flanked by windows and two raking dormer windows above. It is surrounded by bushes and has a pan-tiled roof. It is a very attractive cottage!

My favourite barn is at Bag Enderby in Lincolnshire. At least, the remains of it are. Grade II, but fading fast - the later photo was a few years ago, and more trusses have gone now. Mud and stud returning to the earth it literally came from, and the bricks are hardly daring any better...
A mud and stud barn in 2007. Pan tiled roof and seven bay open cart shed to the side. A beautiful day in summer, with harvested wheat field behindAerial view of the same barn about 10 years later. The roof is completely gone and the interior is full of plants and trees. Four trusses of a mud and stud frame survived at that point, a year ago there were only two. I dread to think what is left now.

Amazing gig tonight with @thelongestjohns.bsky.social and @elponypisador.bsky.social - we've been waiting a long time to hear Northwest Passage live with the whole crew and they didn't disappoint! SUUUUUUU!
Both bands gathered at the end of the gig, discussing the ripeness of a wheel of Double Gloucester decorated with Gazpacho, the Longest PonyThe Longest Pony in full voice, with Sebastia standing in and doing a great job! Marti defying physics and playing two recorders simultaneously
