The correct term is “character restrictions”. I also know what the word “memorization” means. Yes my Gen Z kids had to do rote memorization of multiplication tables. Not sure of the purpose of the democracy dig, but it’s usually Facebook boomers who rage about “kids these days” and vote republican

To be fair, I’m Gen X, was graded on penmanship, and I can’t read most people’s terrible handwriting (my own included). Do your co workers say that can’t read any cursive? I can see them generalizing that they can’t read it when they don’t want to put in the effort to decipher bad handwriting.

Yeah, my nephew’s son is in special needs classes. He’s definitely not getting taught penmanship. Special needs kids are such a mixed bag of ability levels for sped teachers to adjust for, I can see why penmanship would get dropped.

Every young adult and kid I know can write in cursive. They just didn’t have “perfect penmanship” as part of their grade.

Also most schools still teach it, it’s just not a dedicated class through 5th or 6th grade, nor are English papers graded on penmanship. Which was always bullshit. I’d get an A on the content and a C on the penmanship. I’m not a 15th century monk ffs.

Yup, I’m not sure why so many people think the majority of schools abandoned cursive. All the millennials, Gen Z and Gen Alpha I know were taught cursive. It’s just not its own dedicated class after 3rd grade and English papers don’t have a penmanship on the rubric.

This feels the conservatives manufactured outrage over Arabic numerals. It’s not a dedicated class from 2-6th grade like it used to be, nor are English papers graded on penmanship, but there’s usually at least a small unit on it, could be its not be in the grade your friends teach anymore.
