FWIW - we are all dust motes living short lives in a vast & uncaring universe. But each of us can decide to be our best selves, and some of us are tested by situations where being something less would be easier. You faced such a test and passed it; many others did not.

It’s terribly frustrating, but Trump’s madness and mendacity are baked in to people’s expectations. Lying, corruption, delusional behavior are not news.

They are focusing entirely on the MAGA base, hoping to both drive turnout and encourage violence of the Jan-6 variety.

Is it just attention-seeking hate speech or actual belief? Probably impossible to know, and perhaps like her Leader she is disconnected from truth & reality anyway.

Our best path back to a functioning democracy might be an evolution of our system that facilitates more than two parties. What are the key reforms needed to accomplish this?

This is killing a human being for entertainment, not justice. Barbaric and depraved.

To be fair, even without Vance's absurdity, the word did not have a single widely shared meaning. But Vance is defining it the way Seth Rogen once defined "gluten" - "it's the stuff that's bad".

Even prior to MAGA, the GOP showed no interest in dealing with unsustainable trends, whether this was debt, climate change, inequality, tribalism or the collapse of trust.

The run-up to 2028 will feature a major struggle among Dem factions; this is not just "DSA vs Establishment", it's all the many groups & factions with different ideas & goals. What we're hearing now is just the earliest murmurs of what's to come.

It’s good news, but why haven’t we been competitive? No victory lap for Martin; hacks like him led our party to minority status.

I think this is just MY baiting his critics - like others who spend a lot of time online, he tends to spend more time trolling the unreasonable opposition than engaging in sincere dialog. At worst he neglected to put the irony quotes on the statement.

Guessing you mean that bad faith is generally easy to spot? I have not seen MY push misinformation or try to draw misleading conclusions. I have no evidence of him astroturfing in comments. He makes his case thoughtfully. I'm open to hearing what you think are indicators of bad fath on his part.

IMO, the activists do not see it as their responsibility to make compromises or propose a plausible way forward. They see their role as advocating for an unachievable ideal and attacking anyone who isn’t aligned with them as a dupe or a shill. This makes it impossible to address hard problems.

It's all labels, but Vance's ideology is white nationalist, authoritarian, theocratic and neo-feudal. He likely shares grievances with populists but little else.

MuchMore2Learn @muchmore2learn.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
He does not think in terms of objective truth; reality is what people believe, and shameless, relentless lying shapes those beliefs.

I remember arguing in favor of TPP in 2016, and hearing that a much better deal (without ISDS) was just a few election cycles away, with the coming progressive takeover.

My gut says that Emanuel will not get very far & I'm not betting on Harris or Newsom either (plus think AOC will pursue Schumer's seat). But we're going to have a huge field, from all corners of the coalition. Let's just hope the primaries build up the winner vs. tear everyone down.

The election is 30 days away, and I'd guess a significant share of seniors vote by mail. IMO seems unlikely that he could get $2 billion in unallocated funds, generate checks (which would of course need his signature) and send them to people in time to have any impact.

The tech VC mindset is to chase "home runs"; start-ups that become midsize, slow growth & slight profit businesses are sold to private equity and counted as failures. Perhaps it's this investor strategy that is fueling bubbles & busts.

I struggle a bit here - we definitely should restrict predatory lending practices, but accumulating debt is ultimately just a bad choice (as are crypto, meme stocks, prediction markets & gambling). Don't people need to own their own choices, and their consequences?

One feature of Trump II is that he never walks away from any loss - he just keeps coming back, over and over, using the full power of the executive branch. No one should doubt that he will not stop with threats, investigations, frivolous lawsuits etc. until he has taken over the Fed or died trying.

IMO we have two challenges that demand cross-coalitional cooperation: redefining the social compact (the "New New Deal") and reforming (MAGA-proofing) our democracy. We need progressives, the center-left and center-right to work together; even then it's going to be very hard.

Best possible choice for her. Don't become someone's "round out the ticket" veep. Push Schumer out and become a serious player in the Senate, maybe run for prez in 8 or 12 years.

Trump won in '24, IMO, with a meta-narrative that Dem priorities/policies were driven by an activist fringe. It's clear his own priorities are driven by narcissism, vengeance & impulse, completely detached from daily lives of ordinary folks; we should make more of this.

And henceforth the act of renaming anything will be known as “TRUMPING”, and must always be written in all caps. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

My sense is that the RNC & WH are completely focused on turning out the MAGA base at this point. They likely have some dirty tricks/October surprises in store to drive down Dem voter participation, but they've given up entirely on low engagement or non-partisan voters.

There's a more than a whiff of desperation in his need to be the star of every show. And it feels like he's lost the ability to connect with people outside the Natalie Harp level of Trump-worship.

FWIW - I think there are plenty of people outraged by Israel's brutal actions in Gaza and the West Bank, but uncomfortable with the term "genocide". Fighting over the meaning of a word creates a firm division where there should be a grey zone.

I'd also like to hear his views on what to do with the One Ring. Do we send it into Mount Doom, or give it to Trump?

MuchMore2Learn @muchmore2learn.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
He's following Jared Polis (exit stage right?). But fine - never felt he was the unifying candidate that we needed, and there will be no shortage of folks on the first debate stage.

MuchMore2Learn @muchmore2learn.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Agree - they want to be "in on the grift"; even when they lose their seats, they expect lucrative lobbying jobs, corporate board seats, etc. So other than the narrow window where performative apostasy is permitted, they will be loyal MAGA lapdogs.
030
MuchMore2Learn @muchmore2learn.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
FWIW - the window where Republicans publicly oppose Trump is roughly Labor Day to Election Day every other year. The remaining 22 months, they are more afraid of their nominating base and donors than the general electorate.

IMO somehow we (Dems) need to change this dynamic - we need to rebuild durable majorities that holds both houses of Congress for multiple election cycles, and lock Republicans out of a trifecta. This is the only way we can truly reform our democracy and create a new social compact.
000
MuchMore2Learn @muchmore2learn.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Does it matter? Trump decides, his team races to justify and implement the decision. When it fails, they go on the Sunday shows and blame Biden, Zelensky, Canada or whoever.

MuchMore2Learn @muchmore2learn.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
IMO, there are many elected Dems who are lazy and entitled. There are also many who are performative, misleading voters about what’s possible. And there is a lack of leadership. I’m hoping we address these issues in the 2028 primary process.

MuchMore2Learn @muchmore2learn.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
We won't have the votes to convict them - it only takes 34 MAGA senators to block us. And while a majority has subpoena power, they can just not show up, and the Justice Dept can decline to enforce a contempt citation. I worry that voters will tire quickly if all we do is performative stuff.

MuchMore2Learn @muchmore2learn.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Maybe it's not campaign fodder, but I also expect us to block MAGA judicial appointments and launch a massive wave of investigations. Plus if SCOTUS is willing to grant Congress "standing", sue the regime for every breach of constitutional authority.
