If you can afford an electric vehicle and have the means to charge it - you'd be quite satisfied not having to pay for gas. Car companies still developing and selling gasoline vehicles are fighting an losing battle.

Tariffs also cause domestic producers to raise their prices. They have an opportunity to do so when their products face less competitors. So in essence - consumers still pay more for their products no matter the producer is domestic or international.

Hopefully, in a not to distant future - the prices of EVs and hybrids will be low enough to remove petrol and diesel cars altogether. For now however, EVs and hybrids are too expensive for low income households. Only option then, are the old used cars. Which mostly use petrol of diesel.

Weaker currency can make some things cheaper and some things not. What the U.S. economists are afraid of however - is the Dollar losing it's status of reserve currency and the U.S. dollar hegemony being broken. That is what BRICS wants. This administration is playing straight into their hands.
