Rakesh has served at senior levels of NZ police to keep our communities safe and to build social cohesion. He knows these issues as well as anyone. I’d love to see you there to talk through these important issues. This will be an interactive meeting with time for Q&A. 2/2

…the ordinary people and freedom fighters who sacrificed so much for liberty, and to take pride in India’s achievements since that time. Well done Mahatma Gandhi Centre/Auckland Indian Association for organising such a great event and happy Independence Day! 2/2

Today marks 79 years since India achieved her independence after hundreds of years of colonial domination. A joyful and colourful event at Mahatma Gandhi Centre saw hundreds gather to remember the great leaders like Gandhi and Nehru who led the campaign…1/2

Supporting diversity means more than turning up to events for selfies. It means standing up clearly against racism and for inclusion, even when it’s uncomfortable. That is my record and commitment. It is increasingly clear that National and their candidates won’t.

If you want to be the MP for Mt Roskill then you need to speak up for our communities when they are under attack. I was surprised and disappointed that the current National MP has chosen to minimise Winston Peters’ disgraceful and racist comments about Lawrence Xu-Nan and to partially blame Lawrence

Manu Aute Kite Day in Puketāpapa is one of my favourite events every year. It’s always a great time meeting people from across the electorate and beyond. Good food, activities, music, and people. It’s everything you need on a beautiful sunny day like yesterday.

Then on to the small businesses at the corner of White Swan Rd & Giletta to hear their views on local issues and to collect the most amazing slow cooker lamb pie from Levain for a lunch on the go down at beautiful Lynfield Cove.3/3

June 21 is International Yoga Day and I joined hundreds of people at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre for a great introductory session to this ancient practice that is good for body, mind, and soul. A good bike ride in and out to get the heart pumping too, although got totally soaked on the way back!

If you come across a political candidate at your doorstep/shopping centre over the coming week who looks like he has just been in a bar room punch up then rest assured it’s just because he was crossing the road to the bus stop, got distracted by an unusual tortoise shell cat crossing the road…1/2

On the tour we were told that over 18,000 workers have contributed to the project and put in over 25 million hours to deliver the CRL. The result will be a more connected transport system that gets more people where they need to go, faster. 2/3

Much of this support has gone backwards in recent years and it is critical to ensure that every student is looked after and is able to reach their potential. Thanks to the team at Lynfield College for all of your work for local students and families 3/3

Mt Roskill’s public schools sit at the heart of our community and it is important for me to keep in touch with their concerns and issues. I dropped in to visit staff at Lynfield College last week and to review progress on the school’s long-running building works. 1/3

It is a story of hardship and resilience, but also celebration for everything the Fiji-Indian community has achieved in the years since then. Well done to the Fiji Girmit Foundation NZ for raising the profile of the Girmitiyas over many years of advocacy.

Saturday evening saw a huge turnout to acknowledge the Fiji Girmit community. 147 years ago the ship Leonides arrived in Fiji carrying the first group of indentured Indian labourers to work the sugar fields under British rule.

Last weekend’s bike ride was a nice loop around Māngere Mountain. Highlights are the ride over the harbour, nice views along Kiwi Esplanade, and then skirting around Ambury Park. Lovely weather at the moment for some time outside to think about the week ahead.

Good discussion about a range of issues including how hard it is for small business right now, the need for more support for our health system, local housing issues, and of course the affordability crisis most people are facing. Plus a friendly chat with the Mt Roskill 2020 Social Credit candidate!

It’s a bit of a slog through busy industrial roads along the eastern side and it would be a good project for Council to create a shared path here for a full circuit. A good way to get the body and mind ready for the week ahead.

My weekend bike ride was about 30 kms, an interesting route I have done a few times, which goes around the inner Manukau Harbour. I enjoy the shared path on the southern side which takes you through mangrove forests on winding boardwalks before emerging in Favona.
