I had a vague memory of reading this book as a child in the mid 1970s. I couldn't recall any details other than an old ivory puzzle, a lost piece and a reservoir low water level in a summer drought. After a bit of searching on the Internet my patience was rewarded and my mystery book located

"The Map that Came to Life" was a favourite childhood book I recall from the 1970s. With a bit of help from AI I've reimagined 2025 style. That book really appealed to my imagination, each page showing a section of map and how it would have looked. Anyone else remember it?

I know it's morbid, but I can't believe it's 18 years since my wife died from breast cancer at the age of 43. She'd have been 61 today and the proud mother of 3 wonderful children. She's missed seeing them grow and mature into the young adults they are today. And of course they've missed so much too

You are welcome. It depends which direction you do Bamford Edge. I've done both and the south to north version is definitely better imho. You can get the gpx of the ride from my Strava (if you a paying member) strava.app.link/qTEui0nYgUb

So whilst it's fun climbing an e-bike in the immediate short term, it leaves me feeling I'm missing the buzz and satisfaction that can only be achieved by putting yourself into a zone that's uncomfortable.

MTB Martin 🇺🇦 @mtb-martin.bsky.social · 17/06/2025

Yes,I get that having loaned an e-bike a few times. I'm just addicted to the dopamine, endorphin, anandamide & serotonin released when you've pushed yourself hard to beat a tough climb. I feel a bit flat and deflated when I've done the equivalent with an extra 300w assist. Sure it's fun but lacking

The third pic is heading south from Black Tor. The fourth is what we call "Alpine" and the steep descent down to Ashopton. I've marked them on the map attached

This is a book firmly of its time (1925) - emotionally restrained, socially rigid, and steeped in the unquestioned colonial inhuman racism and exploitation of empire. The buttoned up, suppressed emotions feel very alien today, much like the clipped tone of Brief Encounter. #books #reading #novels

Quiet, atmospheric and poignant. This book is more about painting a picture about a small knot of people than knitting a plot. Very enjoyable though in a Cider With Rosie or A Month in the Country way. #books #reading #novels #ilovereading

I wanted to like this book as the synopsis sounded interesting. But I found it dull and tedious with no flair or literary imagination. Maybe it reads better in the original German but comparing this to Laurie Lee this is both tedious and uninspiring. #books #reading #novels #ilovereading
