Arsenal has scored 22 corner-kick goals since last season, 7 more goals than any other side. Their superiority in the set-piece continues to help them get positive results and keep the pressure for the top spot. Huge credit to Nicolas Jover.

Following the 2nd goal, Arsenal creates another chance with similar patterns. Three players block the opponent in the centre part of the box while Timber and Partey block Mazraoui in the far post (again). Creating the space for Merino's free header.

Timber and Merino work together to block Mazraoui — allowing Partey to get space for the header and find Saliba.

From previous attempts, Arsenal’s attacking corner kick patterns involve overloading the far post ➡️ near post. However, they try to attack differently at the second goal — 2 players attack the centre part of the box while 3 players stay in the far post.

Both Rice and Saka can deliver numerous amounts of inswing crosses close to the opponent’s goal which can lead to dangerous situations if not cleared perfectly. Zirkzee almost scored an own goal not long after the first goal.

At the first goal, Timber gives a slight push to Hojlund and then attacks the gaps in the near post. Saliba can’t move towards Onana but that’s enough for them to get the ball into the back of the net.

Amongst the 4 players in the near post, Partey’s attacking position is the closest to Saliba. The last player (usually Havertz/Kiwior) stays in the far post.

When the ball is kicked, 4 players run towards the near post to attack or block while Saliba disrupts the GK (Onana) in the centre part of the box. Partey gets the space in between but misses the ball.

From their 1st attempt — Arsenal looks to overload the far post with 6 players (Saliba, Havertz, Kiwior, Partey, Timber, & Martinelli) in their starting position against Man United’s zonal marking.

Despite Gabriel Magalhães' absence, Arsenal could score two goals from corner-kicks. Timber and Saliba stepped up and helped decide the game last night. Because of that, we will focus on analyzing Arsenal’s corner-kick attempts against Manchester United.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal continued their winning run by beating Manchester United 2-0 at Emirates Stadium. The Gunners struggled to create chances from open play against Amorim’s 5-2-3 defensive shape, but their set-pieces can threaten every team in the world.

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United project is still a work in progress but this is already an exciting start for the fans — some players have displayed great performances and now they need to build consistency to improve their position in the table.

Sometimes Man United’s front 3 also doesn’t provide enough protection, which makes it easier for Everton to progress through the middle.

mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
Despite that, Everton found some gaps in Man United’s defensive block. They bait/drag the double pivot to create central access for players like Ndiaye and McNeil to exploit.

Amad’s defensive work rate is not something I’m aware of — he shows tenacity in winning the ball back and it helps Man United to score two goals.

From out-of-possession, Ruben Amorim’s side presses using a 4-1-3-2 shape — Amad joins the 2nd line with one of Rasfhord/Bruno and Mainoo. He can anticipate the pass and win the ball in the process of the 2nd goal.

Man United created some great chances through build-up but they scored their 1st goal through corner kick. Mainoo & de Ligt block the Everton defenders to create space for Rashford to attack.

mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
Structurally, Man United often outnumbers Everton in defensive transition but they need to improve the execution — as there are still some loose moments. At times, the opponent can still get away from the pressure.

mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
Zirkzee allows the attacking midfielders (especially Rashford and Garnacho) to get more space and focus in advanced positions. Amad also gains advantage from this due to Man United often switching the play to the right-hand side.
100
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
Unlike Rashford, Zirkzee is comfortable in receiving back-to-goal and providing hold-up/link-up play. He smoothes things around him and improves the ‘flow’ of the build-up.
100
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
Bruno Fernandes remains heavily involved in the build-up — frequently dropping deep or drifting wide to connect play. His movements can drag the opponent and create space for Dalot/Lisandro to attack.
100
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
With both Mazraoui and Lisandro filling the wide centre-back position — it elevates Man United’s technical security and build-up quality, The wing-backs benefitted from it, as they can advance to receive in more attacking positions but the execution from Dalot and Amad needs to improve.

Ruben Amorim secured his second victory as Manchester United manager, with his team dominating Everton in a 4-0 win. Since the Ipswich game, he made some changes in the lineup — players like Lisandro Martinez, Mainoo, and Zirkzee were picked to start in the 3-4-3 formation.

Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich was able to fight back in this game and force the draw in Ruben Amorim’s debut game with Manchester United — but we can already see glimpses of his style of play and I’m looking forward to his development.

On the other hand, Hojlund (CF) can provide the hold-up play and offer the movements/runs to exploit the space behind. (Bruno playing as the double pivot with Ugarte after Eriksen came off)

Rashford can get more advantageous situations where he looks to attack/exploit rather than occupy the space.
100
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
The press-baiting and movements from the double 10/AM, help Rashford to get more space but he struggles to engage in duels, drop/receive back to goal, and provides hold-up/link-up play.

In the second half, Bruno and Garnacho switch positions but Manchester United we can see the patterns in previous examples with different variations.
100
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
Bruno’s movements can overload the RHS and give more space for the LHS to attack. An option for long diagonal pass/switch play — Casemiro ➡️Dalot.
100
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
As we can see in previous examples, Bruno look to drop deeper than Garnacho. Bruno can act as the third midfielder to help connect the play and initiate the attack with his passing range.

mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
If Amad can cut inside with his dribbling/carrying, Dalot can provide different passing angles to find players in central areas or attack the space behind (also an option for a long diagonal pass). Both are wrong-footed WB but have different profiles.

With Andre Onana’s ability + backline help to bait the press — Man United can attack the gaps/space to progress and create the ‘transitions’ that benefit Man United’s attacking players.

mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
The usage of Amad is similar to Catamo/Quenda at Sporting CP — he can get past the pressure against two of Ipswich’s players and find Rashford (CF) who gets the space to attack the box.

mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
Man United can score an early goal against Ipswich by playing out from the back with this shape — Bruno (AM) drifts wide to support Amad (RWB) for combinations & interchange positions.

mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
In deep build-up (especially goal kicks) — de Ligt (CCB) looks to advance and form a double pivot with Casemiro (DM). This pushes Eriksen (DM) higher, and Bruno (DM) usually accompanies him to fill both half-spaces. 4-2-2-2 shape.

Ruben Amorim sets up with his usual 3-4-3 formation in Manchester United’s debut game. This system flexibly shifts into a back 4 during deep build-up and a back 5 when defending in a block. But to make this a brief thread, I will focus on Amorim's in-possession approach against Ipswich.

Manchester City created a lot of chances (23) in this match, but they weren’t clinical enough — though credit must also go to Vicario for his crucial saves. On the other hand, Spurs could score 4 goals from 9 shots, which made a big difference.

Big gaps in central areas.

mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 24/11/2024
With Man City conceding two goals in the 1st half, they look to control more possession after the break — but Spurs can punish them in transitions with their attacking outlets. Kulusevski confidently dribbles through the congested central areas to initiate the counterattack.
110
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 24/11/2024
We can see this similar action in the 2nd goal where Spurs look to press Man City’s LHS. Porro RB stepping up ➡️ Forcing Gvardiol’s misplaced pass Son & Maddison’s associative play.
100
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 24/11/2024
Spurs mainly defend in a 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 mid-block and look to high press zonally. Solanke is great at forcing Man City to play on one side so Spurs can then approach aggressively (ex: Udogie LB & Davies LCB stepping up)
100
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 24/11/2024
Despite Spurs’ impressive performance from in-possession — they are even more dangerous when starting from their out-of-possession shape and look to attack Man City in transitions.
110
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 24/11/2024
As the previous examples show, Spurs often switch the play to attack the space on the RHS — Maddison is not involved as much in the process but provides the final movements for the goal.
100
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 24/11/2024
A variation in the build-up — with Maddison still drifting wide but in a more advanced position. Interchanging with Son ➡️ Attacking Man City’s central areas
100
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 24/11/2024
With Spurs consistently playing out from the back, Maddison drops even deeper in goal kicks. The others look to help and combine before switching the play to Kulusevski/Porro/Sarr. Their ability to progress from tight spaces can also help them to attack Man CIty’s gaps in the central areas.
100
mtanalysis.bsky.social @mtanalysis.bsky.social · 24/11/2024
From the LHS, James Maddison is very involved in dictating the build-up and often drops deep/drifts wide. His movements can attract 1-2 players (ex: Lewis & Foden) which opens up the central access.

Before discussing Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs OOP approach vs Man City, let's examine their in-possession. As usual, both fullbacks look to invert — Spurs mainly overloaded the LHS before finding the space on the centre/RHS vs Man City’s 4-4-2.
