It's retraction day. Let these sit with you a minute.
Happy Retraction Day: Lancet Retracts Wakefield's paper relating the MMR vaccine to autism"Without such a system, vaccine-safety concerns such as that reported by Wakefield and colleagues may snowball into societal tragedies when the media and the public confuse association with causality and shun immunization"

🚨 #PAEMST, the nation's highest honor for STEM teachers, has been DEFUNDED in the new NSF budget. This award was est by Reagan in 1983. This award fuels classroom innovation, strengthens the STEM pipeline, and uplifts excellence in every community.

NSF put our names back up on the PAEMST website, but not our bios which are now under review. I am certain that the boxed part of bio is going to be erased. The government is literally erasing our stories.
PAEMST bio page. Boxed portion reads "Within the classrom Marianna has integrated high-quality, evidence based curricula alongside an emphasis on equity and learning about and actin on underrepresentation in STEM. Her master's thesis on the Recruitment and Retention of Female Latinx Students in Physics was awarded Rockford University's Outstanding Research Award"

Note making a la Building Thinking Classrooms + ISLE. This is the missing link that pulls together an active learning environment and collaborative white boarding with notes that actually mean something and a reason to dig into the textbook. Students receive these at the lesson’s end #iteachphysics

Attendance 2004-2022. You can see it was trending up starting in 2013 to our largest conference ever (DC 2018), went back to "typical" and then plummeted after the pandemic. We have many members of our community who will never attend a conference again.

I find it interesting you're suggesting a focus ok K12. K12 has been showing their dissatisfaction with their feet for a LONG time. We only make up 10% of the conference attendance, but 30% of the membership (and it used to be 50%)

The other, other place is doing its thing unusually well this morning
Facebook post that says: Sometimes it seems most of you are teachers shanghaied into Physics. Meanwhile I’m being shaped into a real teacher because I’m a real physics guy. (With a strange background in many other things.)
I’m learning the hardest thing ever: I’m teaching physics to Freshmen at an inner city charter school. Nothing like the suburban seniors who are taking AP Calculus.

From the Twitter archives. Differences in discussion (PEER physics) vs lecture based physics learning. #iTeachPhysics
Two word clouds. "Students responded to the question: in science how do you decide if an idea is right" major answer from PEER physics "I need to see evidence" major evidence from traditional classes "My teacher tells me"

From the deleted Twitter archive. This is hilarious because the next day I found out I was pregnant 😂
Tweet from July 28 2018 that says, "Just saw a participant with her baby and stroller who can't be more than 2 months old. That's major dedication as a mom and a physicist. #AAPTSM18"

This is the set up for a single day of teaching. APPC needs to review yesterday's work and take the quiz. I had to make a backup plan for lecture since my voice is gone. APP1 is vertically whiteboarding and then starting lab, and physics has a condiment day. Don't even include the room setup. #tired

Today we did "whiteboard shuffle" which is a riff on @kellyoshea.bsky.social whiteboard speed dating, which was created by Scott Reed! In this iteration there are 3 different AP problems for students to solve. (I was also shocked how awesome this went because my first though was this was too much)
diagram of 9 desks in a circle, labeled A, B, C, A, B, C, A, B, C. Text says, "The Set up: Ideally number of stations divisible by three. Use three problems (A, B, C)"

I never considered FB a place to get physics support, and there’s some great stuff in certain groups, but others you get that whole picture of educators. I posted my test intervention there too and got this comment. It pains me how many educators gatekeep physics. (And this was a woman!)
Fb post: I’ve always found it curious how woke education models want to force people into thinking that there is no difference between boys and girls or men and women’s way of learning and thinking and performing. Of course there is a difference, I see it in all boys science education vs all girls science education. There’s no denying that fact. Those who are not afraid of a challenge and who are more aggressive in wanting to prove a common sense point or getting something to work or figuring out how it works in terms of engineering will clearly outperform others in the sciences and math. That is the nature of the subject. And yes, again this data confirms the difference. I’m just taken aback on the method of giving your students the full test the day before that same formal test. It is 100% cheating and unethical. Can’t try argue around it. Unless you did it just for the research..?

A few weeks ago we hosted Dr Renee Horton as our public keynote for the IL section AAPT meeting. Organizing this meeting was a big deal for me, and I was not prepared for the joy I experienced when I realized how many of my current and former students were there.

The science teacher can never rest. This body of water was perfectly still and reflective, until just the right drip dropped from a tree. The result? The reflection of the power line turns into a transverse wave!
