When I was five, we had to leave the movie theater screening 1977’s “Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure” mid way through due to my big sobbing tears of terror. Not sure if that, or hiding behind the couch during Wizard of Oz witch castle sequence was my first. (Big sheltered softy, clearly!)

I hadn’t clocked there was an ‘88 Hermans… Apple Music had it listed as a different year for some mysterious reason. They were my favorite discovery from the ‘89 competition!

Final two shows today for my currently running project "A Chorus Line" at the 5th Avenue in Seattle... Fantastic work across the board from all collaborators. If you are in town, there is still a matinee and evening opportunity to see our revisitation of this classic before it goes poof!

1) The novelization was better than the movie. And 2) TIE fighters were probably named after the bow-ties which they vaguely resemble

Sorry to miss! Keep thinking I will come, but thwarted by scheduling. (Dropping off kid at college this time… will just be singing to myself on the car ride home.)

I’m impressed by “ALL RESEARCH…” and the fact that theirs is the only prediction in the final 20 not picking YHF for the winner.

Voting and rooting for Spoon here. Really like both artists but Revelator always just bounces off me in a way my Welch faves Revival or Hell among the Yearlings simply don’t. Always puzzled me why this is held up as the essential LP of hers? Any Spoon always satisfies and this is a good ‘un.

“The kids’ll think you’re foxy if you chugalug your moxie and never show the pain” - difficult soda and red hot dogs are the prescribed diet when the family heads to ME to visit the in-laws. Initially gross but now all we desire. Moxie forever!

The fictional abandoned AI creating Joseph Cornell-esque boxes in Gibson’s “Count Zero” was genuinely thrilling as that book’s macguffin. Art-making impulses without any LLM style prompt or directive and using self discovered materials & inspirations could be a new Turing test.

To the death!
A pink background with scrawled cursive reading “beat happening” and “jamboree” around a central drawing of what is probably strawberry jam in a jar, all drawn by band member Heather Lewis if memory servesThe band and their instruments pose below the words “The Pogues, If I Should Fall From Frace With God.” This cover is different than the CD I had in 1988, which visually included James Joyce as a key member of the bandStrange wooden totems posed in front of a colorful burst of orange-red flowers, with superimposed blue and yellow scratchy bits. A san serif font saying “The Golden Age, Legendary Pink Dots” floats on top, contrasting with the chaos below. I found this album with the promos and cutouts from Wax Trax tucked on the shelves of the college radio station I volunteered at in high school, and it was a gateway into a whole new world. I think I stole this LP from them. Wish I still had it. A light Purple field of color. A horse’s head. A filing cabinet. The words “Wire - A Bell is a Cup”. What does it all mean? The remaining words from the title (“until it is struck”) are apparently saved for the spine or liner notes, I guess? Wire reinventing itself.

I’ll confess my .5 remark wasn’t fully serious BUT my hot take is that three rawer song versions on “The Modern Age” EP > their “Is This It” re-recordings of the same, and maybe they should have just stopped there as a brilliant flash in the pan

Thanks. It is coming up on 14 years now, so not a recent wound, of course. Music is a great way to remember and celebrate though, and in many ways is more celebratory and less sad as time marches on

When my sister got married back in the year of this tourney, CDs were gifted to those helping out, personally curated by the groom. I was given Yo La Tengo, as befits my sensibilities still, while my late wife got Lucinda. Sister is now divorced but ESSENCE lives on, and I can’t help but vote for it

My alt-country/no-depression phase was def in the back half of 90s, but I also picked Son Volt in the Uncle Tupelo divorce. Wilco never felt alt-country to me aside from AM. They seemed to be trying for something else. YHF is when it clicked for the me and got me to reevaluate their earlier work

“It’s Beginning To and Back Again” was Wire’s 89 Tournament entry, but that album does feature a few reworked and reimagined ABIACUIIS songs, which could be the confusion. (“Bell” was also my Wire gateway drug, so Kent’s newsletter description resonates. A definite nom!)

Name a TV show you’re positive no one remembers but you
The year is 1957. The cast and crew of the Lester Guy Show are extremely apprehensive about their upcoming live television broadcast on the Zoblotnick Broadcasting Co. network. Lester Guy despises fellow cast member Betty Hudson for unknowingly becoming more popular than him and schemes to destroy her career. Two of the seven episodes were written by David Lynch.

It’s telling that nothing from Get Ready is included in Apple Music’s “New Order Essentials” playlist. (Crystal is the lone rep on there, but it’s the mix from Total.) Hate to vote against a fave band, but it’s not the 80’s here anymore so it’s a no today for NO against a better album from Keys.

Today, I’m fully seduced by Destroyer and a bit bored with Mogwai’s post-rock slow burn. Dan gets my vote! (Both have their place though, and on a different day the reverse might have happened… the beauty of the middle seeds, I suppose.)

a drawing of a circle with a square in the center
Alt: After a bright yellow square-shaped light flashes, a backlit “Street Hawk” graphic title treatment does a very 90’s title-treatment-esque flipperoo and a silhouetted motorcycle poppin’ a wheelie cruises through some sort of foggy, blue, scaffolding-rich urban environment as linear floor dots flicker.

“Game” as distinct from “Toy” is what I was thinking too. Is chess a toy? Is monopoly? Is the chess queen I have given a personality to in my barbie dream house (along with a few lego spacemen and a spork with googly eyes) a toy, but only in that context? Is Minecraft a toy but Pac Man a game?

I tend to conflate Squarepusher with Lifter Puller (craig finn’s early band) when I see their names, even though they sound nothing alike, but really liked Go Plastic as today’s dog walk soundtrack. Still gotta vote White Blood Cells though… WS’s breakthrough LP still works for me 25 years later
