Keep it random throughout the year but put a finger on the scale to adjust groups as needed. This allows me to sit kids in their IEP seating requirements, put the kid who forgets her glasses at the front, etc. 010
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 07/07/2026I use this policy because it gives students time to learn at their own pace. All assignments can be redone until the summative assessment. Emphasis becomes on feedback and learning rather than earning points for the grade. 130
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 07/07/2026My 9th grade students have very few assignments not completed by the summative assessment. Assignments must be meaningful to students. I’m okay giving a student an A if they earn it on the test even if they don’t complete a single assignment along the way. My tests are all application based. 150
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 07/07/2026Summative assessments are the only things that count in the gradebook. Natural consequences for late work. Prelab not completed = no lab. Work not done in time for feedback then no feedback before the test. All formative work must be at a B- or higher to be eligible for a retake. 151
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 15/06/2026Is it really a bad idea? We want students to be able to communicate professionally. We want them to understand that there are so many more jobs than doctor or lawyer. We want them to see that we are still trying to understand the world and there is much still to learn. Is there a better way? 000

Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 14/04/2026I had a 9th grader ask me if I use AI to give them feedback on their science papers. Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 17/12/2025You aren’t more susceptible because you have had Covid before or because you were vaccinated. But you might be more susceptible in that some people’s trained immune system cells don’t “learn” quite as well as others and/or don’t stick around as long just waiting to go on offense. It’s just bad luck. 020
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 17/12/2025All this to say. It sucks that you have Covid again. I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well and I hope you recover quickly. 010
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 17/12/2025But immunity just means you have cells that recognize the virus and can mount an attack. It doesn’t mean you can mount the attack fast enough to fight off the virus before you get sick. 120
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 17/12/2025Having Covid previously means your immune system cells have been trained to fight off the infection. But those cells seem not to stick around as long as the cells trained by the vaccine. The combo (vaccine and prior infection) means you should have some immunity. 110
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 17/12/2025The virus has been mutating a lot since the vaccines were developed. While the vaccines are still effective, your immune system cells aren’t great at recognizing the virus so you can still end up getting sick. You should be better off than someone who is unvaccinated as their cells have no training. 120
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 17/12/2025Additionally, the training immune system cells can die off over time, resulting in less and less immunity until there is no immunity at all. Booster shots are necessary once the trained cells start to die off. 120
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 17/12/2025If the part of the spike protein that the vaccine trained your immune system for changes a little bit then your response time slows down. With enough changes to the spike protein, your immune system may not recognize it at all and the vaccine will be ineffective. 130
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 17/12/2025Vaccines work by training immune system cells to recognize the virus, thus reducing the time it takes for your body to respond to an exposure. The Covid vaccine trains your immune system to recognize a portion of the spike protein. But, the spike protein changes rapidly due to random mutations. 120
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 17/12/2025It takes time for the immune system to recognize the virus and mount an attack. Prior infection leaves behind immune system cells that are already trained to recognize the virus, reducing the time it takes to mount an attack. If you can mount an attack fast enough you don’t actually get sick. 120
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 17/12/2025Viruses replicate inside your cells. Sometimes, if you have been infected with the virus before, or you have had a vaccine, your immune system is able to destroy the viruses before they damage enough cells to be noticeable and before other parts of your immune system kick in resulting in symptoms. 120
Hannah Crowder @mshcrowder.bsky.social · 29/11/2025But I see students work hard every day. But they have to be interested and invested. The struggle is finding the passion and cultivating it. College and your entry level jobs are a means to an end. An end that is increasingly failing to be reached even with that college degree. 010
