Love thy neighbour as you love yourself.

Speaking up is a Quaker responsibility. An excellent essay by Ayishat Akambi contained the insight that self silencing removes “critiques grounded in care” leaving critique to those who will ground it in contempt.

Happily choosing cringe most of the time.

A gnome with a red hat sits on the branch of a tree at dusk with the words: true freedom is knowing you’re cringe and choosing to be yourself anyway.

When making budget choices, increasing taxes on the top 1% has an outsized positive impact on GDP, second only to reducing healthcare costs.

Let’s connect Defense, Coast Guard + Border $. Seems like 🇨🇦is getting the proportion right. Shows recent funding projections (not actuals). Let’s hope that our health, education, social entitlements and public services remain in balance. $ = local, prov, fed #canpoli #elbowsup #never51st

Vaccination matters. It is one of the greatest advances in modern medicine. All of my children are here. I am here. We are vaccinated.

In 2018, our former PM Stephen Harper (Conservative) was a Trump endorser. Now, he’s pushing back: “Canada subsidizes the US… maybe we should he selling our <energy> to other people.”

Don’t do resolutions- just double down on what you are already doing successfully! For me, that’s riding my ebike a gajillion kms more than my old bike. It’s making 95% of my meals vs eating out. It’s doing weights sometimes. It’s hosting family suppers on Sunday. It’s buying zilch in January.

Today, I spent some time reading about Haiti and the proliferation of gangs; the connections between sexual violence (rape was not illegal until ‘05); abortion is still illegal. The strain on women 💔💔 is brutal. My heart goes out to Haitians: there are 20,000 active gang members & gang turf wars.

For example, in addition to Buy Nothing January, I may do Buy Nothing October. I may vow to do “replacement only” for things. I will likely give up meat entirely …again, and fail again… that’s OK. Simple is not ornately earnest or perfect: earnest striving turns simplicity into austerity.

Do you agree? Austerity hurts but simplicity doesn’t? And sometimes they look a lot a like. For me, as a privileged person, I get that not everyone has the choices I have. But I do think choice makes a difference, in how we experience “having to live with less”. 2/5
