Samuel’s family sold their property to pay a $7,500 ransom to the militia that had kidnapped him. After taking the money, they demanded another $7,500 and refused to release him. When his family could not pay, he was beaten. He still bears cigarette burn scars on his chest.

“Living in Libya was the most difficult thing in my life,” shared Yonas, a young Ethiopian who had previously fled war in Tigray and later in Sudan. Leaving this behind was worth the risks of a dangerous journey.

They had been at sea 12 hours on an unseaworthy rubber boat trying to reach Europe. “The journey was very dangerous; the weather was not good,” Yonas added. Despite the risks, several, including him, had tried to cross before, and after failing they kept trying.

🚨Europe is failing its legal and moral duty to save lives at sea. ⚠️Criminalising NGOs won’t stop people crossing. Outsourcing migration control only puts more lives at risk. Saving lives is a legal and moral obligation. 🔗Read our full statement: searchandrescue.msf.org/news/europe-...

The #CentralMediterranean is one of the deadliest migration routes, with 26k+ ppl recorded dead or missing Criminalising NGOs won’t stop crossings. People flee what they’re escaping 🚩These deaths are not inevitable: hey are the consequence of EU deadly policies.

This proposal must not become law. Italy must place the protection of human life and dignity at the centre of migration policies.
051
MSF Sea @msfsea.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
This is part of a wider and ongoing crackdown on civilian search and rescue in the Mediterranean. Since 2023, NGO rescue vessels have been detained 42 times. When rescue efforts are obstructed, the consequences are human: more lives at risk and more suffering.
152
MSF Sea @msfsea.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
It would also allow for people rescued at sea to be transferred to third countries, distancing Italy from its asylum and protection responsibilities. International law is clear: people in distress at sea must be rescued and protected.
130
MSF Sea @msfsea.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
The proposed norm would allow authorities to block certain rescue vessels from entering Italian waters for up to 6 months under vague “national security” grounds. In practice, civilian search and rescue ships could be prevented from saving lives.

MSF Sea @msfsea.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
‼️6 UN experts warned Italy in a letter on 6 July that the proposed "naval blockade" bill may violate international human rights and refugee law. People crossing the Central Mediterranean already risk their lives to reach safety. This bill would make sea rescue even harder.
