This Ebola disease outbreak once again exposes persistent failures to ensure that accessible medical tools for diseases disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries are prioritised, funded, and produced as part of R&D. It has to change now. msfaccess.org/principles-e...

With no validated treatments or vaccines yet, and limited diagnostics for Bundibugyo virus disease, R&D and funding must embed transparent and enforceable conditions from the outset to guarantee timely, sustainable access to affordable medical tools for the most affected communities.
Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus.
What is different this time?
- No validated therapeutics or vaccines
- Limited diagnostic tools
Bundibugyo virus is different than other virus causing Ebola disease.Rapid initiatives, resources and actions are being mobilised at national, regional and international levels.

Now is the time to ensure that conditions that guarantee access are embedded in R&D and funding initiatives.Principles to ensure access for the most affected people and countries:
- Affected people, communities and countries must be at the front and centre of R&D and access decisions.
- Ensure enforceable access conditions across R&D funding governance
- Transparency and accountability should guide publicly funded response and coordination

The intellectual Property chapter of this trade deal largely preserves India’s public health safeguards and does not include any harmful provisions that go beyond the World Trade Organization’s TRIPS agreement, such as data exclusivity or patent term extensions.
"After two decades of determined resistance by affected communities and civil society, this moment marks a hard-fought victory. The exclusion of data exclusivity and patent term extension from Intellectual Property chapter are not abstract legal victories: they ensure that medicines do not remain out of reach for years after patents expire." 🦠 By 2050, AMR is estimated to contribute to 8.2 million deaths worldwide. For people living in fragile and conflict-affected settings, where access to infection prevention, diagnostics, and antimicrobials is limited, the impact of AMR is more severe. #WorldAMRAwarenessWeek
FACT
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR): when microbes, like bacteria, evolve to survive exposure to antimicrobial medicines, such as antibiotics, used for treatment or prevention (prophylaxis). This makes antimicrobials less effective and infections more difficult to treat.FACT
AMR: One of the most significant global public health threats of our time. By 2050, AMR is estimated to contribute to 8.2 million deaths worldwide.FACT
Humanitarian settings compound the AMR crisis. Natural disasters. Displacement. Overcrowded places. Conflict. Collapsed health systems.FACT
People in low- and middle-income countries experience the highest rates of AMR globally, with limited access to diagnostic tools and microbiology capacities to identify AMR and medicines to treat AMR.

Lenacapavir has been recommended by @who.int for HIV prevention this week. While this prevention medicine could be a game-changer in turning the tide on HIV epidemic, Gilead's licensing agreement will undermine broad access. Here's why 👇
