“I’m so sorry about that miss, let me—Jasmine?” says a familiar voice. Its deeper than I remember, but I know who it belongs to.
I should’ve stayed laying down; now I can’t pretend to be unconscious. But the way the nervous sweating starts, it’s kind of a moot point anyway. An arm circles under my arms and hoists me to my feet so fast, I feel like my stomach is still down on the floor. Yep, lifting ficuses has made him very strong.
My feet falter and he steadies me, asking urgently, “Jasmine! Are you alright?”
Opening my eyes to his caramel face pinched with worry, any hope of escape vanishes. “Hey, Darius.”
His dark honey eyes brighten and a smile stretches across his face. “Hey, Jas. Its good to see you, girl,” he beams. His hands squeeze my shoulders a little before his brow draws together again. “Did you hit your head?”
“No, I’m fine,” I say but he’s already taken off a glove and pressed a hand against my poofy hair, checking for bumps. My heart is beating very fast and I feel so hot around the ears. What is he even doing here? He’s gotten much bigger. My head doesn’t even clear his shoulder anymore and all I can see are the muscles of his neck beaded with perspiration while he leans towards me. He smells like pine trees and outside. The shock of him and fear of what he’ll say is making me a bit nauseous. I sway a little and his hands are back on my arms, holding me as if I’m a plank that will just fall over if he lets go. “I fell on my butt.”
“I’ll have to tell them to watch where they’re going,” he mumbles under his breath, looking at me warily.
“It was my fault, I wasn’t looking, don’t get them in trouble"
