Okay, another #DIY question for this sunny Saturday: I'm patching a long run of #drywall with a new piece cut lengthwise, so 2x8. I had thought I would put the cut edge up so that taping and mudding would cover and protect the crumbly edge, but now that I think about it […] [Original post on c.im]

They think we're idiots. The problem, as the last presidential election demonstrated, is that more than half of us are.
Wall Street journal opinion piece headlined "DOGE Works. Let's Keep It Going." Subhed: "A cadre of gifted, creative and patriotic thinkers can uncover wasteful spending and reduce federal debt."Screenshot of part of the Wikipedia article about DOGE. It reads as follows: "DOGE has claimed to have saved hundreds of billions, although another government entity estimated it cost the government $21.7 billion.[35][36] Another independent analysis estimated that DOGE cuts will cost taxpayers $135 billion;[37] the Internal Revenue Service predicted more than $500 billion in revenue loss due to "DOGE-driven" cuts.[38] Journalists found billions of dollars in miscounting.[39][40] According to critics, DOGE redefined fraud to target federal employees and programs to build political support;[41] budget experts said DOGE cuts were driven more by political ideology than frugality.[42] Musk, DOGE, and the Trump administration have made multiple claims of having discovered significant fraud, many of which have not held up under scrutiny.[43][44][45] According to the estimates of Brooke Nichols, DOGE cuts to foreign aid programs had led to some 300,000 deaths by May 2025, mostly of children.[46][47][48] By February 2026, when her counter that estimated the number of deaths was retired, the numbers were kept at the one-year mark from when the cuts began: 781,343 deaths caused by the funding discontinuation."

The Blue Robe

by Wendell Berry

How joyful to be together, alone
as when we first were joined
in our little house by the river
long ago, except that now we know

each other, as we did not then;
and now instead of two stories fumbling
to meet, we belong to one story
that the two, joining, made. And now

we touch each other with the tenderness
of mortals, who know themselves:
how joyful to feel the heart quake

at the sight of a grandmother,
old friend in the morning light,
beautiful in her blue robe!
