3rd entry… originally this was inspired by someone in their 20s telling me I could call him ‘daddy’ - I’m in my early 50s. I was completely dumbfounded and felt like something somewhere got lost… life is weird.

“Daddy Issues” serves as a visual interrogation of language and generational disconnect within queer culture. The stenciled phrase, "there is no such thing as daddy issues without a daddy," directly addresses the modern co-opting of the term 'daddy' by young gay men. Historically, this title served a vital role as a marker of respect for queer elders. By applying the text in white and deliberately overstenciling it in green, the physical application of the paint reflects the ways in which historical meaning is obscured by contemporary culture. It is an invitation to reflect on the roots of the language we use and the generations we are meant to honour.

Second entry submitted… artist statement in the alt text. I decided to do an “excerpt” of the artist book I did for my grad cert.

"Ya Poofta" was the major project for my graduate certificate in visual arts. What began as an examination into the etymology of homophobic slurs evolved into a deep dive into the history of homophobia in Queensland. This research brought my own feelings of disconnection from Brisbane to the surface. That sense of alienation began with my arrival as a child migrant from the Netherlands and was further compounded by my mid-life return to the city following the breakdown of my marriage.
The physical work features handmade paper pulped from a deeply personal archive. By using materials like my immigration documents, divorce papers, and 1990s gay magazines alongside abstracted train-window photography, the piece visually reinforces this enduring sense of displacement and disconnection.
